According to nationally syndicated radio host and Chapman University law professor Hugh Hewitt, 118 Republicans in the House of Representatives have to show some backbone and elect Rep. Raul Labrador of Idaho as the new House majority leader, replacing defeated Virginia congressman Eric Cantor.
Hewitt thinks that the Puerto Rican son of a single mom who worked his way through school, served a two-year Mormon mission in the poorest parts of Chile, who has made his mark by defending property and protecting second amendment rights, has fought for oil and gas exploration, and is an adamant advocate for border security first, before regularization -- not citizenship could spearhead a monumental shift in Republican politics.
Although a long shot to defeat Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy from California, according to Hewitt in his column in the Washington Examiner, a Labrador victory in a House Republican secret election to be held on Thursday will inspire Speaker John Boehner to make a shift in the right direction.

I still don't know that much about who he is, I want to be careful who I support, we don't want another Cantor who talks one way and walks the other.
Time to give new blood a chance. If the new guys screw up, we can always get rid of them too.
Hewitt is only suggesting this because he knows a squishy GOPe will be barfed on by the Grass Roots.
So Hewitt wants a moderately conservative guy to avoid a hard core conservative reaction.
This is just one step more sophisticated that reflexively supporting the most liberal Republican possible, which Hewitt knows would be counterproductive. Not that he minds liberal Republicans. He’s generally pro-liberal. He just knows it will fail this time. So he’ll propose the next best option that won’t total piss off the base.
I heard all that on Hugh’s show. What a slime. No actual conservative principle involved. Just Liberal Republican reality-politics.
The first two things I learned about him were:
(1) He said people should not criticize Bowe Bergdahl’s family, even though Bergdahl’s Father made at least two astounding pro-Taliban statements.
(2) Raul Labrador's occupation before entering Congress - immigration lawyer.
I do not have good feelings about this guy.
I heard that too. Hugh’s main complaint seemed to be that guys like Kevin McCarthy will not come on his show.
Hewitt is GOP-E through and through.
He plays the Tea Partier, and when he does, for example here in not supporting McCarthy, he has an ulterior motive.
I know nothing about Labrador, but Hewitt’s endorsement is a red flag.
There are only two guys running, if you don’t support the more conservative one, you are being silly. Labrador is not FREEP level conservative, but is miles better than McCarthy, and as far as the MSM goes, Labrador is practically a fascist.
I’m fine with Labrador in comparison to McCarthy.
I’m just commenting on the cynicism with which Hewitt supported Labrador.
Hewitt actually prefers the policies of McCarthy, but he’s cynically supporting Labrador because a McCarthy victory will cause too many actual conservatives to flee.
Hewitt is fighting a rear-guard action for the GOPe with his support of Labrador. What a jerk.
I think I can just about quote Hewitt:
“We have to get a moderate conservative like Labrador as a sop to the Tea Party so that we can avoid a real nut case like Tancredo who is totally wrong on immigration”.
I don’t think Hewitt is that cynical. He is a party hack, but I think he is pretty open about it.
I listened. That’s what my ears heard. Others may interpret the same show differently.
Raul is WAY better than KEVIN!! GO RAUL!!!!! And Republican Congress....WAKE THE HELL UP!!!
Grow up.
Raul is another pro-amnesty sellout.
He is not. But he's better than that fake repugnican't, real democrap infiltrator McCarthy. My question is: Where the F--- is Louie?
Grow up about what? Hewitt is a RINO loving GOP-e hack! Pretty sure he had a huge tingle in his leg over Romeny in 2008 and 2012 along with his RINO cohort Michael Medved.
Oh my....Hughie is WAY more conservative than Medved.
Not really.
Hewitt pretends to be more conservative.
Medved doesn’t pretend. He’s pretty straightforward.
HE has done a lot of fund razing for tea party candidates...
