A British medical journal announced a finding last month that might be the best news in the history of the world: Nearly one out of three people in the world is overweight.
Members of the media responded to this thrilling discovery by lamenting the globes growing waistline. Pundits rushed to condemn widespread access to inexpensive food. Everyone seemed so excited to attack obesity that no one noticed the reports incredible story of human achievement and hope.
Throughout history, malnutrition and hunger-related health issues have killed more people than any other cause. Over the course of the past half-century, however, the development of high-yield, disease-resistant crops, modern irrigation methods, and synthetic fertilizers and pesticides combined with improved transportation systems and the explosion of market-based economies throughout the world have made food far more plentiful, affordable and available than ever before. As a result, the world produces enough food to feed every person living today.
Even those who cant afford food commonly have access to several meals a day through devoted charities, generous individuals and public-assistance programs.
Now, when people die of malnutrition or starvation, its almost always a result of war, political unrest or failed government policies that mismanage distribution of crops or food.
The tremendous advancements made in farming and food production have turned obesity into a bigger threat to humanity than starvation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention even refers to obesity as an epidemic.
If obesity is an epidemic, its too bad there arent more like it. This epidemic is the result of so much available food that most people in the world can eat what they want, when they want. The consequences of this epidemic include a dramatic reduction in childhood deaths from malnutrition, better health across the globe and greatly increased longevity.

Nanny State PING!
The propaganda on this is so bad that I now cannot find clothing in my size as nobody carries it anymore.
Apparently, they all believe that there are no people 5’5”, 123#, with a 29” waist out there anymore.
First, this is not an epidemic because obesity is not a disease. Second, the current rate of obesity is not because of the availability of food but prevalence of processed food which appeals to the senses but does not satisfy nutritional needs.
But most importantly, it is no ones damn business...especially the government!
you’re kidding right??? My daughter has no problem finding clothes to fit her and she is 5’6” 127 lbs with a 28 inch waist....
Much of the problem, maybe all of it, is due to the drastic change in wheat, through Hybridization...it is no longer your grandma’s wheat. The plants are short and stubby, growing only 18”...nothing like the past.
On the good side, yields are up 10-fold, so like the article says, there’s more than enough food for everyone. On the bad side it’s basically poison to the human body, because of the rapid chemical changes due to the cross-breeding - there are new proteins and chemicals that humans have never seen before and the body does not like that - and the results show it.
The truth is that obesity, not just overweight, may to a great extent be attributable to our intestinal flora, the viruses, bacteria, archaea, and other microorganisms and parasites.
At least one Phylum, the Firmicutes, and 26 species of bacteria in the human gut microbiota, and the entire genus of Enterobacter appear to be linked to obesity and related metabolic complications, with obese people having flora that instead of having hundreds of dominant strains, only have a limited number that take up most of the space.
Add to that a species of archaea, that are not bacteria but look like them. It consumes waste gases that are waste products from digestive bacteria, waste that inhibits bacteria, and thus digestion. So the archaea make your digestion more efficient.
In addition, Human adenovirus 36 (HAdV-36) or Ad-36 or Adv36 is one of 52 types of adenoviruses known to infect humans. AD-36 is the only human adenovirus that has been linked with human obesity.
But there are other bacteria associated with weight loss, such as Akkermansia muciniphila. If we can discover just the right combination of bacteria to subtract from the flora, and that which to add to the flora, much of obesity can be eliminated.
Nope.
I keep having to tell stores near me “order the darn pants! 29 x 30 shouldn’t be hard to find!”
If they are there, they are those testicle crushing tight jeans.
But truth doesn’t scare anyone, or empower tyrants, so what good is it?
Apparently you’ve never heard of most major retailers and/or “junior” fashion stores.
I cut sugar and grains out of my diet, but I haven't gottten my family to join in. I could not find hamburger buns without High Fructose corn syrup.
Obesity = people eating too much and not doing enough work to burn it off. It is very simple.
My younger son is 5’8, 118 pounds. It has always been difficult to find clothes for him.
Yeah, they don’t have jeans that I’d wear.
I don’t want pants with holes in them for fifty bucks.
Nor do I want funky colors.
Just gimme plain Jane pants, 29 x 30 relaxed fit, no gimmicks, no horrid prices for something that says “Mudd” on it, just plain pants and keep them in stock.
And the issue described is with the following: sears, JC penny, Macy’s, Walmart, target, Kmart.
Those are my choices in immediate area.
And they never have my size in stock.
Yep, I agree. But I do think it’s worst, as we haven’t adapted to it, and it’s changed massively from what it was. Get the wheat out and you’re making big progress, get the carbs down too and you’ll likely win.
Good grief! FEED the poor boy!!
;-)
Yeah, don’t you love it?
But we’re all “obese” according to the news.
Historically being fat meant you were wealthy, now it just means you have an EBT card.
Well, all of this “freedom” sounds great, until we get the bills for expensive medical care and our society pays a (VERY high cost) for shortened work lives. I don’t have a “right” answer here, but if people want to eat themselves silly and weigh 400 pounds, good for them; but don’t expect me to be very happy about paying for your food and medical care, which, in most cases, will be the result.
