The United States has evacuated most of its personnel from the Embassy in Baghdad and dramatically stepped up security for those who remain as thousands of Islamic fighters bear down on Iraq's capital city.
Some 5,500 people work in the massive Embassy complex in the heavily-fortified Green Zone in Baghdad. Many will be airlifted to Amman, Jordan, and others will be sent to consulates in Basra, in the south, and Erbil, in the Kurdish north.
Other workers will remain in Baghdad.
Some 12,000 fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) are marching on Baghdad after quickly capturing Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, last week.
The fighters, who are predominately Sunni Muslims - a large minority in Iraq, then turned south and began baring down on Baghdad, capturing towns along the way.

April 30th 1975. Almost time for the Saigon last helicopter out leaving from the top of the US Embassy.
This is be organized by Baathists/Saddam era Iraqi Army who are using ISIS as a front or mayhem. This required professional skill and years of infiltration and organization.
Unconfirmed also.
Baghdad airport is now under attack by ISIS rockets.
I said it very early after Obama was re-elected. The comparison was just too obvious.
Sounds like the same meaning as “frequent wind” from the fall of saigon. sigh.
And none of it would be happening if the pretender in the White House didn’t want it to.
Good job Obama.
UNREAL! CNN can’t stand televising a failure for a democratic administration.
“Prediction: stalemate. Kurds and Sunnis to the north, and Shiites to the south forming a branch office for Iran and an intolerable situation for Saudi Arabia.”
That’s going to be the end game. Kurds in the far north, where they’ve always been, Sunnis in the middle, and Shiites in the South. The Shiites WILL DEFEND Basra which is their territory (with help from Iran), but they WILL NOT DEFEND Baghdad, which is Sunni. The Kurds, of course, are not about to let the ISIS bunch get near them.
The country will be partitioned...in the way it should have always been.
The invading jihadists have no intent to split anything up. They want it all. And they have U.S. backing.
Just like Serbia/Kosovo, Iran Green Revolution, Egypt, Lybia, Syria, and now Iraq. Clinton and Hussein have ALWAYS backed and supported the jihadists.
Every. Time.
No one should be the least surprised about what is going on now.
Yes.
Unbelievable! They broadcast 24/7 from Egypt when there a turmoil there....but not here. Hmm....wonder why?/sarc
The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government,
...but I suspect it would look even worse for Obama if our planes got shot down by stinger missiles from Libya.
HE will read about the slaughter in the newspaper or maybe on TV after his golf game. What an incredible jerk!

I read bout an hour ago that the head of al Nusra had been assassinated in Syria, and now the ISIS commander is in charge. Al Nusra was a rival organization that has been displaced by ISIS.
They’d be doing the job enthusiastically if the president had an “(R)” after his name.
Heard it's getting mighty hot in Baghdad.
