WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. retail sales rose less than expected in May and first-time applications for jobless benefits increased last week, but the data did little to alter views the economy is regaining steam.
The Commerce Department said on Thursday that retail sales gained 0.3 percent. While that was below the 0.6 percent rise expected on Wall Street, April sales were revised higher to show a 0.5 percent increase, helping to keep growth forecasts intact.

unexpected !
Oh that W up to his old tricks again. Will you never stop being at fault?
The recovery will commence at the end of 2016 at the earliest.
I’ve been looking for a job. Anyone seen the pay rates? Wow, they have really dropped a lot in the last few years. Quite a few offer only 29 hours. Thanks Obummer!
That's because those views are based entirely on blind faith in the Obamessiah and have no grounding in empirical reality.
“the data did little to alter views the economy is regaining steam”
Especially from Obama sycophants in the media.
I’m in Retail and manage a Garden Center. We were up to our @sses in alligators this Spring, just trying to keep up with customer demand! 2K MORE paying customers through my store than last year...in an 8-week period! TWO THOUSAND PAYING CUSTOMERS! A lot of the new traffic was due to another garden center closing last year and our winter, which lasted FIFTY SIX MONTHS. *SMIRK* (Yes, it sure FELT that way!)
But, it’s over now. And though I have a NICE cushion to coast on for a while, MAJOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION is right around the corner for our city and life is going to suck for years to come.
And, yes. I am only ‘allowed’ to hire for 29 hour weeks, thanks to 0bamacare. I get a report each WEEK, so I can see who I have to cut back on for hours the next week. My best employees? Sorry. I can’t keep ya employed to any great extent. Half-@ssed employees that don’t care? Yep. I can ‘afford’ you now. (No, I can’t - Customer Service is going to suffer GREATLY!)
Nothing like blinding me in one eye and tying my hands behind my back and expecting me to still get the job done!
Thanks, 0bama!
(I do NOT blame my employer one tiny bit.)
I’m actually seeing “help wanted” signs more than in the last 5 yrs around here (Indiana). Lousy jobs no doubt, but signs not seen for quite some time.
A lot of them appear to be for truck driving jobs. My SIL’s Dad drives for Waste Management. He says most of the young guys who apply can’t pass the drug test and most old guys struggle with the physical demands of trucking.
“which lasted FIFTY SIX MONTHS.”
Well...because Wisconsin!
Is there still ice on Green Lake? On Poygan? Do you Sell Chocolate roses and Tulips? :)
People over at the Bureau of Lying Statistics (BLS) are going to be out their bonuses unless they pick up the pace for the “Summer of Recovery, Part IV”!
‘Chocolate’ Cosmos and Tulips in the fall! :)
It was the most BRUTAL winter on record! When it finally warmed UP to 40 (ABOVE zero!), I felt like I was having hot flashes all day long, LOL!
As of last week, there were icebergs on Lake superior!
Debt/revenues down. Popcorn up.
Oh, you betcha! People are TOTALLY into growing their own food these days, and are HUNGRY for the advice I can give them in doing so.
On our busiest Saturday this season we had customers standing in line for TWENTY minutes just to buy a 4-pack of tomatoes. And NO complaints AT ALL! It was obviously THAT important to them to ‘spend’ 20 minutes of their lives on that!
And this is, ‘The People’s Republik of Madistan’ where the Libtards want EVERYTHING Free, Fresh, Fast and at Taxpayer Expense!
Can you imagine standing in a check-out line for 20 minutes for tomato plants? Even *I* can’t, and it’s how I make my living.
Something is a-foot if even the Libtards, ‘get’ it...
Perfect. Sad, but perfect.
