What If Putin Threatens Us With War Over Alaska?
The Washington Post ^ | June 8, 2014 | By Will Baude

This isn't related to the core enumerated powers questions in Bond but struck me as sufficiently interesting that it was worth posting about separately. In his post about Bond, Mark Tushnet writes:

This isn't Justice Thomas's problem but James Madison's [but] Justice Thomas quotes Madison to the effect that treaty cannot "dismember the empire." Really? Suppose Vladimir Putin lets the United States know that he's going to bomb the bejeezus out of the "red" states of the United States unless we negotiate a treaty returning Alaska to Russia. Work out the scenario as you wish, but I doubt that it's a good constitutional design to require the U.S. government to take the negotiating position, "We're fine with giving up Alaska but unfortunately we can't do it, so bomb away."

Canada won’t allow it. Nobody wants the enemy that close.

Alaska is American. It is part of the USA.
Invade Alaska and we will do the same as when Japan invaded Alaska during WW2. We kick them out.

The Constitution provides for the common defense, not the partial abandonment.

The Constitution also provides for protection of the sovereign borders, but that hasn't been enforced for years.

Canada can’t stop Obama from doing a damn thing.

Hell, Obama KNOWS that nobody in America can stop him from doing a damn thing.

Obama is a dictator.

Obama can do as he pleases, and as he sees fit.

And he knows this, as does his party.

So this hypothetical of Obama surrendering Alaska to the Russkies is simply in keeping with what he has already done, and how he spins it for his personal vendetta… er, agenda against America.

Obama would give it up if the Deal included giving Sarah Palin to the Russians.

“Obama will refuse to negotiate and bless the destruction of ‘Red States’.
THEN when Russia has finished, Obama will surrender Alaska.”

He would also give Begich an opportunity to take a cabinet position for services rendered, Palin would be arrested by us as an enemy combatant and turned over to Putin, who has apointed Murkowski as the territorial administratrix.

Obama knows this.

It's why his regime have stockpiled 2 billion rounds of hollow point ammo and are outfitting local police departments with MRAPs and tanks.

They are for folks like you who will not allow Obama to do as he pleases.

Do you know where in the Constitution, exactly?

I would hesitate to lead an army into the wilds of Alaska. The citizens of the state are serious, armed and without fear.

But remember this.

Most of the North American West Coast down to Baja California was “Russian” at one time. They have a theology that is once something is part of Holy Mother Russia, it can never not be part of Russia.

The will make a move on old territories if and when they think they can get away with it.

Ummm... Catherine the Great was dead for almost 100 years before the US bought Alaska.

Alexander II was Czar when Russia sold us Alaska, and some say he did it so the British wouldn’t take it from him (the Crimean war—Russia versus Britain—took place only ten years earlier).

Ah....the irredentist argument.

“Wherever a Russian has planted his boot, that is sacred Russian soil forever.”

As noted, Putin can have San Francisco. His progressive views on homosexuality will be welcome there.

;^)

F'off Russia is all I can say. "Behind every blade of grass".

Anyone want's to try and stir shit up on my soil (and I don't care the state) my weapons are not for hire, they are being donated from my shoulder through the muzzle. The FMJ's are a donation too, for the receiving party.

What if China decides they want to fight Russia for it (and/or the Russian Far East)? That could get interesting.

The question and the article is lame. Not sure why there are so many responses.

I am pretty sure the AK residents are better armed than the red army.
