Miss Nevada, Nia Sanchez, was crowned Miss USA on Sunday night. During the pageant, Sanchez, who has a fourth-degree black belt in taekwondo, was asked a question about sexual assaults on college campuses. Sanchez suggested that women get training to learn how to defend themselves.
Guess what happened next:
The #YesAllWomen crowd are going nuts that the winner supports self defense. Haha #MissUSA Mitch Behna (@MitchBehna) June 09, 2014
For many, yes, the suggestion that women learn to defend themselves was a ridiculous idea, and it even constituted victim blaming:
How did she win after that awful and offensive answer? Idiot Cait Cremeens (@CaitCremeens) June 09, 2014I'm sorry, but women shouldn't need to take self defense classes to protect themselves from rape #MissUSA Peter Simon (@PeterSimon12) June 09, 2014
Let's hope Nevada uses her media tour to reiterate that teaching girls self defense is NOT the best way to protect against assault #MissUSA Mandy Velez (@mandy_velez) June 09, 2014
Miss Nevada, who just reinforced victim-blaming rape culture to millions of viewers, is crowned #MissUSA 2014. īrīn ✺ əfīʿ (@shereenTshafi) June 09, 2014
Miss Nevada was asked about rape at colleges and answered that women need to learn to defend themselves OR MEN COULD JUST NOT RAPE. Anna Garcia (@a_mariagarica) June 09, 2014
Not happy w/ Miss Nevada's answer that to stop rape we should teach women to defend themselves Why don't we teach men to not rape? Kelsey Bemus (@KelseyBemus) June 09, 2014
Miss Nevada described how individuals need to protect themselves from rape, instead of teaching others not to rape. Stop the victim blaming. Haley Ploucha (@hallepalouka) June 09, 2014

I get that the college sexual assault problem can't be solved in 30 secs but still icky to pretend like self defense is the answer. #MissUSA Elisa Benson (@elisabenson) June 09, 2014
@hayley_lady What she is doing is promoting the idea of a woman taking control of their own life. Hooray Beerz (@HoorayBeerz1) June 09, 2014
@HoorayBeerz1 Maybe that was her intention, but she should've noted that a lack of self-defense is not the reason behind rape. Hayley Johnson (@hayley_lady) June 09, 2014
Miss Nevada saying women should learn self defense to prevent rape/sexual assault 👌 k. #yourejokingright Emily Cowart (@cowartemily) June 09, 2014
Miss Nevada's answer is my problem with the way people look at the issue of sexual violence, it's not just about self defense #MissUSA Yamini Bhandari (@YamBhands) June 09, 2014
Miss Nevada might be gorgeous, but needs to realize teaching self defense to women isn't the solution for ending sexual assault #YesAllWomen Elisabeth Jasina (@jasinae) June 09, 2014
Miss Iowa says today's youth are narcissistic followed by Miss Nevada who wants to end rape with self defense classes Really? Sick #MissUSA Bergen N. Baucom (@BergenNBaucom) June 09, 2014

Hey Miss Nevada- how about instead of woman learning to protect themselves, men learn to not rape women? Cait Cremeens (@CaitCremeens) June 09, 2014
No, Miss Nevada. The solution to rape is not that all women should have black belts. Thanks though. #nottheproblem #missedthepoint #MissUSA Ashley Ramsey Hannum (@ashleyrramsey) June 09, 2014
Miss Nevada: How is it a woman's responsibility to learn to protect herself from rape? #MissUSA2014 #MissUSA #getaburkatoo Stef (@stefawilson) June 09, 2014
Self-defense training seems to make more sense than certain other ridiculous methods that have been suggested, but apparently many disagree.
If they don't want to protect themselves then they just need to lay there and enjoy it.
I guess that feminists want others to protect them and keep them safe.
But doesn’t that defeat the purpose of being a feminist?
Don’t they want their independence from men and don’t they want combat assignments and doesn’t that require the use of lethal weapons?
If women were able to defend themselves and take full responsibility for their lives, why would they need the professional victimization crap that comes out of supposed feminist ‘s mouths?
I don't recall any claims at the time that by doing so she was enabling rapists.
No one should have to wear a seat belt in a car or a helmet on a bike. Neither should anyone take any preventive measures of any kind because here in Utopia everything is flowers and butterfly kisses
The common rant in the tweets is “teach men not to rape”
That gives rapists a built in defense for rape...Your honor I did commit the rape, but I’m still learning and have yet to graduate from the Do Not Rape course.
hang on. Women being able to kill a rapist means the rapist wins?
What kind of weirdo freak leftist thinking is that?
It’s offensive and awful and anti-woman to suggest that women not just lie there and let the rapist do it??
Huh??
Other sure fire liberal praise makers would be.
Damned Koch Brothers !
Climate Change !
Hmmmm, looking at the statistics pertaining to rape, it looks like ........ the feminists and other libs probably don’t really want to have that “honest conversation” they are always crowing about. I don’t understand their problem with this, other than they hate pretty girls.
wear a black .38 iron chastity belt
Whatever happened to “I am woman hear me roar. I am invincible”? Wasn’t that the Women’s Movement’s anthem back in the 70s?
Let us not make the mistake that rape, or at least all rape, is induced by the perceived sexual attractiveness of the intended victim.
Otherwise, guys wouldn't break in and rape 90 year old women.
I don't buy into the notion that rape isn't about sex because it's mixed up with issues of hatred, violence and domination. As if somehow sexual feelings are inherently isolated from such less-positive feelings.
It is perfectly obvious, at least to me, that rapists get sexual pleasure not only from the sex itself, but also from the infliction of pain and humiliation.
Which is why I'd be perfectly happy with the death penalty for rape-rape.
The real objective is to reach a state where any woman can destroy any man by just making an accusation.
The idea that women learn to defend themselves short-circuits that.
Hey libs, how about we teach thieves to quit stealing? Wait, then your beloved ruling class would be out of business.....
“Better to be raped than armed!! What a motto!!”
You aren’t wrong. It is confirmed at 1:20 on the link below....
“But what if they want to kill you? Well, day just have to kill me” Obama hat wearing would rather be dead than armed.

“Women shouldnt have to take self defense classes in order to be safe?”
Agreed.
Note, however, that this is not the Garden of Eden.
Also note the all too frequent predatory behaviors of Urban Ferals, Latrino gangs, ad nasueam.
Exactly, which is why Miss Nevada is spot on, and the grief she is taking for telling women to be prepared to defend themselves is foolish.
