Vermont gun importer lays off 41, blames rules ( World War II-era M1 Garand rifles )

A Vermont gun importer is blaming the White House for its laying off of 41 workers because the government blocked its plan to bring nearly $30 million worth of antique, American-made military rifles home from South Korea... Century International Arms to re-import the World War II-era M1 Garand rifles ..

This importation was denied despite our explaining that the denial would harm the company and pointing out that there is no rational, gun-control reason to block the importation of these historic, 70-year-old firearms

...

the South Korean government had been given preliminary approval for the deal last year and the departments of State, Defense and Justice had signed off on it.

A little OT but I have a request for some advice. I’ve been seriously considering getting a rifle chambered in .308/7.62 because I’d rather get something a little longer range and more powerful than a .223/5.56. I’ve already got a medium range .357 lever action rifle, so I want something a bit bigger. I’m really leaning toward the M1A (M14) with a decent scope. I know it’s a bit heavy and I’m gladly willing to accept that. Anybody have any pros/cons on the M1A?

I think there are 5 round clips to make them legal for big game.

Nope! The loading device in this case really is a clip as apposed to a magazine. It has no bottom and no spring. The eight rounds are held in the clip by the presence of all eight rounds. Once a single round is removed from the clip the rest will fall out.

The MI Garand has an internal 8 round clip.

The M1A is a fine rifle. I have one, and it shoots straight and operates reliably. I am very fond of it.

I also have a DPMS AR-10, which shoots the same ammo. It is pretty heavy but a pure pleasure to shoot.

If you want a weapon that makes you and others drool, get a Belgium made FN LAR.

If you are like me, being unable to decide clearly means you need them all.

Aside from this, the fact remains that Century built guns are often *terrible*. This probably had something to do with it; Century weapons are often referred to as being assembled by ‘angry drunken monkeys.’

Yeah she was a Beauty. spend some time with her on the range, make note of
her shot patterns and you have a a trusty beauty as well.
But she would get heavier with each mile on a long march.
I Do wish I had her back now.

Patton stated this to be the finest combat foot soldiers rifle of all time. Something like that.

I would love one. Trained with one in boot camp in 1971. Shot the M16 at the range for ribbies but used the M1 for drills and training.

So we need a goal of effectively eliminating any action by the Brady bunch. How can people be so stupid?

When we got our M-14s in basic everybody was excited. I was the first to observe that now we have to carry these things everywhere.

My Remmington deer rifle holds 5 rounds in a detachable box magazine. Banning the re-importation of the M-1 based on magazine capacity is a joke.

Five-round en-bloc clip for M-1 Garand

Two-round en-bloc clip for M-1 Garand.

Sounds like they would be an effective zombie defense tool,
since the zombies tend to just have “sideways pistols”,
the Garand would easily get them outside their range.

I second the recommendation on the AR-10. If you want to spend a few extra bucks, check out the Ruger SR-762, I think that’s what it’s called.

Aside from this, the fact remains that Century built guns are often *terrible*.

This fact bears amplification.

I bought two L1A1s from Century; and, neither one can feed from a perfectly good magazine. After $250 gunsmithing they still can't feed. Do not buy anyhing from Century Arms.

Garands use en block clips that stay in the magazine until the cartridges have been expended. Stripper clips, as used in Mausers and copycats, are removed after the cartridges have been forced into the magazine. Detachable box magazines, on an AR for example, can also be loaded from stripper clips.
