Will Joni Ernst be Iowa's First Female Senator?
Washington Post ^ | June 4, 2014 | Jackie Kucinich

Posted on 06/05/2014 8:33:40 AM PDT by Din Maker

Joni Ernst is now a step closer to becoming the first female U.S. senator in Iowa’s history.

blowing away her opponents in the five-way primary Tuesday night, winning with 56 percent of the vote.

A relatively unknown candidate when she declared in July 2013, Ernst surged into the national spotlight in late March with a TV ad titled “Squeal,” in which she detailed how her experience castrating pigs as an Iowa farm girl would help her “cut pork” in Washington. She will face Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) in what could be a very close and expensive general election. So far, Braley has a more than a 5-point advantage on Ernst – 41.8 to 36.5 percent.

“Soon we’ll be hearing about the phony war on women,” Ernst said Tuesday night. “Well, I have a message for them: I’ve been to war. I’ve seen the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make every day to defend our freedoms.

If Democrats want to start throwing around words like ‘war,’ they better be doing it to honor those men and women. As for their cheap political attacks, well…I look forward to hearing Bruce Braley… lecture me… about what’s best for women.”

Ernst, will need to corral the rest of the Republican true believers – a process she started in her speech on Tuesday night.

“Whether you voted for me today, or someone else, I promise you, I will work every single day to earn your trust and your support,” she said.

“Because together we all have the same goal: To defeat Bruce Braley in November.”

I think she is very capable. But, it's going to be a fight. Iowa is a Democratic State. Gotta get the women to vote for Joni. Well hell, it works for the Democrats.

I grew up in Iowa but don’t recognize the state now. The propaganda mills are extremely effective there.

Iowa is a Democratic State. Gotta get the women to vote for Joni.

Iowa is also a FARMING state. And the turd she's running against is Bruce Braley: who hates and denigrates farmers, while loving attorneys ...

Gotta get the Farmers to vote for Joni.

What crops do they raise in Des Moines and Davenport? The farm communities are shrinking and the liberal enclaves are growing. But, she can win this race.

It’s called “nut cutting time”.

And I have participated in this farm ritual. One bunch of hogs, they got to 150#-plus, before we got to the job, and it was a hog rassle every one, to take them down and perform the operation. When you consider that swine are sexually mature at six months of age, that was calling it pretty close, as they were already four months old.

It would have been easier getting into the ring for exhibition wrestling on WWE Smack-down.

There was no difficulty in locating the organs, though. On very young boar pigs, sometimes they are not yet descended, and the operation could not be performed.

There are 92,000 family farms in IA.

There are 3.1 million people in IA.

I sure hope so, IP.

I’d put her odds at about 50% right now, a little less at worst. We have a good shot in 10 rat seats, Iowa is probably #10 (MI, CO and IA are surely 8-10 in whatever order). It’s is not really a “democrat(ic) state” but it’s tough. The last few elections it’s given the GOP POTUS nominee about a percentage point less than the country at large.

The rat Braley is a well fell-funded but less than stellar candidate.

Braley was described as the “condescending, elitist turd,” by the editor of the newspaper in Albia, IA.

It is telling that CBS wasn't even talking about the success of conservatives in Tuesday's primaries. It supports my hypothesis that constitutional conservative candidates have to be better, MUCH BETTER than their opponent. And when they are, they will win.

Ms Ernst just might be the right person at the right time.....a conservative accomplished woman who's not a whiny women's libber.

I’m in Davenport. The QC Times is a propaganda sheet for liberals, but they disguise it effectively for people who lack critical thinking skills.

I’m voting for Joni. Braley has some baggage, so it will be close.

Colorado will be harder than Iowa. Michigan will be easier than Iowa, as long as Land keeps her cool

What I find most interesting about this is primary is that Joni Ernst somehow got EVERY faction of the GOP on her side during the primary. We keep hearing about how the “GOP-E” is at war with the Tea Party for every Senate seat, but that wasn’t the case in Iowa. Mitt Romney endorsed Ernst, Marco Rubio backed Joni Ernst, Sarah Palin endorsed Jodi Ernst, and so did the “Tea Party Express” crowd. How’d she get them all on the same page?

I hope so. Bruce Braley has outed himself as a fiendish elitist lawyer who looks down his nose at rural citizens. Not going to play well outside of Des Moines. GO JONI!

I think I can shed some light on it. There were five candidate in all if memory serves, and one was just there to pimp his book. Of the other four, there was a first time businessman, this Marc Jacobs guy who was a political newcomer with all the RINO positions, there was Sam Clovis, radio host who most conservatives were leaning towards, and then Joni Ernst, a rather undistinguished state senator few knew much about.

In the debates, Ernst impressed people with conservative positions and tact, which no doubt helped convince Palin to endorse her. Once that had happened, conservatives moved towards the likely more electable Ernst over Clovis.
Meanwhile, the establishment, having failed to get any of their preferred candidates to run, became disillusioned with Jacobs’ lackluster and stumbling campaign. When Braley made headlines attacking Grassley and essentially all farmers who didn’t go to law school, the establishment decided the dynamics favored the plucky Ernst over the more metropolitan Jacobs.

Ernst came from behind to a stunning victory. Lets hope she votes like Deb Fischer, and not like Kelly Ayotte.

Palin endorsed Ernst because she’s a woman. Just like she did with Ben Sasse, Chris McDaniel, T.W. Shannon ....

I’d vote for Ernst in a heartbeat.

McConnell, Boehner, Alexander , et al have nothing to worry about Joni and her castrating device, they have no b@!!s.

Indeed it’s a rare case of everybody jumping on the bandwagon with the best chance of making it to Washington.

My take, pretty much the same as what Viennacon said.

The other candidates were nothing special, freepers were most fond of some guy (Clovis) who probably would have had no chance.

Palin endorsed her, that carries weight, except for Steve Loseagain I think Palin’s done a great job this year endorsing electable conservative candidates.

Then her hog ad caused a stir and resonated with the voters, her poll numbers rised, the “GOPE” faction realized she was acceptable to them and had easily the best chance at beating Braley, so they rallied around her, remarkable.

BTW, I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that, if Joni Ernst wins November’s Senate election, she would become not only the first female U.S. Senator from Iowa, but the first woman to represent Iowa in either house of Congress. (If Ernst wins, MS, DE and VT would be the only remaining states that never have sent a woman to either house of Congress.)

Here’s some good polling news for Ernst, with the caveat that the poll was conducted by “Ras without Ras” (Scott Rasmussen left Rasmussen Polling last year), and their polls have been all over the place: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3164458/posts I agree with Impy’s assessment that Ernst’s odds of winning are approximately 50%, and that IA, MI and CO (in no particular order) represent our 8th to 10th best Senate-seat takeover opportunities; our top 7 takeover opportunities are ND, WV, MT, AK, AR, LA and NC, and opportunities 11 to 13 are NH, MN and VA (OR, NM and NJ are much longer longshots).
