Seattle: $15 Minimum Wage Means War on Small Business

Hippie infestation.

Seattle’s city council on Monday unanimously approved an increase in the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour, making it the nation’s highest by far.

The increase was formally proposed by Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, and his spokesman said he intends to sign the ordinance on Tuesday.

Apparently unaware that it doesn’t have the weather advantages that other places pricing themselves out of existence do (Los Angeles, anyone?), Seattle seems to be ready to set a record for how many businesses it can ruin.

The earnest idiots who whip up this minimum wage frenzy always use big corporations in their examples. It’s usually along the lines of, “The CEO of McDonald’s makes millions while the burger flipper struggles and that is wrong BECAUSE FAIRNESS.” No discussion of the fact that an entry level, part time job isn’t supposed to be your adult income wage for life.

What they don’t discuss is just how stifling this progressive feel good, math-hating nonsense is to current and aspiring small business owners.

Because they want to drive as many people as they can into financial hell.

A nearby restaurant has started paying staff about $20.00/hr. There is also a “no tipping” policy — there’s a surcharge on everyone’s bill instead. It’s still too early to tell how well this experiment will work out in practice. (One suspects that habitual non-tippers will give the place a wide berth, as they wouldn’t be able to avoid the surcharge.)

If the minimum wage is raised to $15, or above, that cost will inevitably show up on restaurant bills. That will be a huge disincentive to tipping. It seems likely that workers, who now rely on tips to top up their wages, won’t see any net increase in their remuneration. The better ones (who now get the biggest tips) might actually see their total pay go down.

Children, can you say higher costs, higher prices and/or higher unemployment. The libtards are counting on these destructive effects being prevented or delayed, because the government is able to create money out of thin air, which will increase the demand for labor.

“Americans with the fewest skills are getting pounded in the labor market, because their own government has failed them by not stopping the endless supply of surplus labor — and everyone is mad at them for looking for a way to push back. Minimum wage legislation is a desperate response to a desperate situation.”

I agree with you, but there is more to it than that: think of the immediate increases in contributions to Social Security, fed/state income taxes, etc. - that have just been leveled at business owners (the employees themselves would just be losing a portion of their new-found money they naver had before). As other FReepers have pointed out, think of the impact on union workers who have their salaries as a multiple of the minimum wage.

I think most FReepers’ jobs aren’t safe; masses of Asians are being imported to replace white-collar American workers in many fields.

Also the 15$ raise will keep many of those workers impoverish the rest
of their lives by not forcing themselves to find a better means of making
a living for a higher wage. Or improving their education at the very least.

Low paying jobs are the gateway to the real world, and not intended to raise
a family! Like teaching, Teaching and Gov work used to be made up of people
willing to sacrifice for their country, not income and retirement benefits.

The only companies this will hurt are the Small business Ma&Pa.
The larger companies will just raise their prices or close locations.

It's just plain stupid.

So if you're a machinist at Boeing you're now earning minimum wage ?

Most, if not all, Unions have clauses in their contracts that stipulate a raise in pay for all pay scale Union members when minimum wage increases.

That's why you will always see Unions supporting, if not being the first ones to actually demand an increase in the minimum wage.

We will not be visiting any restaurants or shops in Seattle.
10% sales tax + $15 minimum wage will price them out for us.
We go to Seattle frequently, have a kid in college there.
