The Pentagon on several occasions had ground-level intelligence on where ArmySgt. Bowe Bergdahl was being held captive at various times down to how many gunmen were guarding him but special operations commanders repeatedly shelved rescue missions because they didnt want to risk casualties for a man they believed to be a deserter, sources familiar with the mission plans said.
Commanders on the ground debated whether to pull the trigger on a rescue several times in recent years, according to one of the sources, a former high-level intelligence official in Afghanistan, who said the conclusion each time was that the prospect of losing highly trained troops was too high a price to pay for rescuing a soldier who walked away from his unit before being captured by the enemy.
A second source told The Washington Times that the rescue operation plans were high risk and became even less attractive in recent months when officials in the Pentagons Joint Special Operations Command grew convinced that the Taliban and the militant Haqqani network, whose operatives were holding Sgt. Bergdahl, were eager to cut a deal for his release.

But we’ll release Top Al Qaeda and Talibunnies.
This is why we shouldn’t vote for druggy Muslims.
RE: But well release Top Al Qaeda and Talibunnies.
Aren’t they going to be held securely ( AHEM ) for us in Qatar?
If Bergdahl were the biggest hero in American military history 0bama still committed high treason by letting the five highest level terrorists in custody go.
Guess the SF were ordered not to interrupt Benedict Bergdahl’s badminton game with his little bearded friends.
Do you think O, while in Europe, will actually go to Germany Air Base to photo op with this guy?
I have some sympathy for the guy. His opinion on the war changed. But, he signed up to do the job. You can’t quit the military in war. I would not be in favor of a lengthy prison sentence, but he needs to be behind bars for some time.
And what of the 5 terrorists who were released?
.... The deserter .... Who served with "Honor and Distinction" According to Susan Rice who was deemed to be the most qualified person for the position of National Security Advisor.
Obama to Bergdahl: "Sorry my friend, we thought we could get you a nice pension, PSTD payments, book and movie deals... but there's been a little hitch... instead you may be spending the next 20 years in the slammer. Oh well, stuff happens. Look on the bright side, we did free 5 of the good guys.".
This whole scandal should be looked at in reverse...
The Ø regime’s primary decision was how to release the 5 MVPs in Gitmo. After much thought and focus-groups, they found how they could accomplish ALL their agenda, and in exchange, give absolutely NOTHING. The “bargain chip” was Bergdahl. Not only is he nothing, but he is less than nothing.

“And what of the 5 terrorists who were released?”
Or the men killed looking for this POS?
If the SP did not want to risk men looking for him, that is good enough evidence for me, that he is not the hero.
Yes, why can't the Washington Times put it together properly? Bergdahl had been declared a deserter after a thorough investigation. Thenceforward, the guy is not "believed to be a deserter," he is a deserter! That goes doubly to blow the cover off his appearance with Zero at the WHut!
HF
I salute the commanders who declined to risk their troops by attempting to rescue this scumbag.
they should have pulled the trigger on him
that would have been justice and a strong msg to the tallys
If what is being reported is true, he is a traitor and deserves punishment accordingly...sympathy be damned...
Treason is punishable by death during time of war and life imprisonment otherwise...
Either would suffice.
This whole scandal should be looked at in reverse...
Agreed.
And, this was probably the ultimate goal in Benghazi.
“Allow” the Ambassador to be kidnapped.
Then, release these 5 Terrorists - or, the Blind Sheik, as others have suggested, for the ransom...
