Last month, I ate a strawberry. The taste exploded in my mouth as my throat was bathed in rich juices. The meat of the berry was soft and succulent.
I was in France.
Last week, I ate another strawberry. There was a slight reddish flavour, which combatted the petroleum essence of the packaging. The meat of the berry was corky, dry and flavourless.
I was in Canada.

Is that the Kosher bakery that sells the garlic ice cream? That stuff sounds so strange I’m curious to check it out next time I’m in NYC.
I did years before I left. My attitude about the entire city and I was born in Park Slope, moved to East Flatbush when I was 5.
Was there in September for my 35th HS reunion, I probably won't be back. Took our 15yo with us, she said it was fun to visit, she couldn't imagine living there. Of course she's used to back roads, growing our own veggies, catching or shooting what's on the dinner plate, and not having to lock doors. To her a traffic jam is 6 cars ahead of us because ducks are crossing the road and it's tourist season - guess what? It's the same for me.

I like Brooklyn - some very pretty sections and a vibrant cityscape. My original point was the trendy obsession with Brooklyn that’s been going on for years now. My Manhattanite brother finally ventured out there it was so cool.
Of course, now the trendy place is Astoria, Queens. Eye-roll.
There is this thing called a map. Please go find one. Now look and see where Canada is. Now look and see where france is.
In your opinion which one has a climate where you have a long growing season and short transportation time for strawberries and which one has a climate where you have a short growing season and long transportation time for strawberries?
If you want flavorful fresh strawberries eat them during the time they are in season in Canada, about 3 weeks. For the other 11 months and one week learn to enjoy frozen, canned or dried. Or move to france.

Italian food in Italy is totally overrated. It’s expensive and at best just average. I can take you to a restaurant right now and in ten minutes you’ll be eating the best Italian food ever in Chicago. The socialists have killed Italy and France is little better. How much was the strawberry?

My point was about Italian cooking - not necessarily restaurants. Actually, a lot of the food in Rome was lousy - you had to be careful where you ate. My husband’s relatives in Sicily were very good cooks. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen Sicilians pour olive oil into baby bottles!

Parts of Brooklyn are terrific, and other parts are the pits.
I went to Brooklyn College and had friends from all over the city, one who lived in Astoria. We always had fun when it was “his” weekend for where we were going and what we were doing. My high school is in Park Slope, but we had our reunion in Bay Ridge. When we drove up from Virginia, we stayed with a former classmate and family in Windsor Terrace. her husband and son to my husband and daughter t Coney Island.
My daughter got a big kick out of the “neighborhoods” because most of them are bigger and more crowded than even the largest town in the county where we live. That was her big issue - too many people. (and too much traffic!)
Well, people are either city people or they’re not. I was desperate to get out of suburbia as a kid and NYC was my mecca. I was recently in Astoria and while I liked the street life and the lack of skyscrapers, if I saw one more Greek restaurant I was going to scream. Greek-American food is not my fave...
Absolutely, without question.
I was born and raised in NYC, yes Brooklyn, but it is still NYC, but I knew by the time I was my daughter's age (she'll be 16 next month) I was not city people. I loved my time working on Wall Street and in Greenwich Village and on Park Avenue, and even in the court/municipal area of Brooklyn - but was absolutely thrilled when I was offered a job in Dover, Delaware in 1982 just 6 months after I graduated.
