NEW ORLEANS (AP) Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has won the latest 2016 presidential straw poll at a conservative summit in Louisiana.
Cruz took 30 percent of the vote at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans. He edged out conservative speaker and author Ben Carson.
Organizers at the annual conference say about a third out of 1,500 delegates voted in the straw poll. Delegates had to pay to register for the conference and vote in the straw poll.
Cruz promised delegates Saturday to continue his uncompromising approach on Capitol Hill.
Carson did not address delegates before the voting.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Texas Gov. Rick Perry trailed Cruz and Carson in the poll

Put down the Konspiracy Kool-Aid. Obama has been a failure at every step of the way. His policies have failed. He's lost the media and fellow Democrats are distancing themselves from him. Contrast this with Bill Clinton who, for all his foibles, at least knew what the hell he was doing.
Carson is also a Seventh Day Adventist. If you think the media had fun with LDS and Mitt, wait until SDA beliefs get highlighted in a campaign.
That doesn't disqualify a woman.
Everyone in the US knows the country is on the slippery slope to the trash heap of civilizations that self-destructed.
The flukes, homosexuals, union bosses, and takers that elected Obama seem to think he has us on the right path. You and I know better, but we need to convince the middle.
The disagreement is about what to do about it.
Americans voted for this, TWICE.
The US needs a strong father figure that gives us confidence and makes us feel secure. Someone who has a track record for good decisions and voting. That's what will bring voters over to the constitutional conservative side.
Agree for the most part, but why a "father figure".
A conservative woman (I assume you're promoting Martinez) will not bring over women who want a female pres and have committed to hillary.
Not necessarily Martinez, but no one on our side is going to win over the "Ready for Hillary" voters. Not Cruz, not Bachmann, not even another Reagan. We need to win over the middle.
An attractive, articulate, take-charge guy will. We need an American equivalent of Putin.
Not that again. Putin was a thug in the KGB that lost to Reagan. His only advantage is who we elected to deal with him.
We need another Reagan. We don't need to disqualify candidates who might fit that bill because they weren't born with the same plumbing.
Clinton’s only saving grace was that he inherited the Tech Boom and the end of the Cold War, neither of which were his doing. But he was President when the Tech Boom created all of those jobs, and the tax revenue and the end of the Cold War allowed for the “balanced budget”, so he got the credit.
The RINO’s will win again as we all vote for various candidates in the primaries unless we all unify behind one candidate before the process begins.
Cruz, Palin, Beck, Levin should all get on the same page.
That didn’t happen in Kentucky the other week and Mitch McConnell won.
I could unify behind Cruz....
Who does Reine-out represent? The GOPe!
“qualifications to do the job of President? What has he done that shows that he has the executive experience to run the government?”
Let’s hear who you think meets those requirements.
In the straw poll, 633 ballots were cast, which was attended by more than 1,500 people.
1. Ted Cruz 30.33 percent
2. Ben Carson 29.38 percent
3. Rand Paul 10.43 percent
4. Mike Huckabee 5.06 percent
5. Rick Perry 4.90 percent
6. Curt Clawson (write-in) 4.58 percent
7. Jeb Bush 4.42 percent
8. Marco Rubio 3.32 percent
9. Rick Santorum 2.37 percent
10. Paul Ryan 2.05 percent
11. Allen West (write-in) 2.05 percent
12. Chris Christie 1.11%
For me personally, that is a political issue, not a constitutional one, where we need to keep the focus. Let the left and ruling class go there.
Obama has successfully wrecked the country, by design.
Whether or not it is wrecked beyond salvage is for us to see in the future.
But whether or not he wrecked it through incompetence or design... I think he is personally an idiot but totally driven by the motivation to wreck the USA, by design, and that with help from his allies, he did just that.
Bottom line: if the USA can be salvaged it will need a CONSERVATIVE who wants to salvage the USA BY DESIGN, not some f*ing RINO with “experience” who:
a) can’t even see the real problems
b) won’t do anything to offend anyone to fix the real problems.
For me, experience is a distant second to commitment. I want to see commitment, commitment, commitment and more commitment. The experience of a Senator is experience enough.
Agreed...He can assist with the transition of obamacare tyranny into healthcare freedom.
One of his strengths is that he seems like Reagan on foreign affairs.
After Obama’s libertarian type weakness in our NATO responsibility, we will need Cruz bringing in his Reagan instincts.
Gosh, I hope you're correct. I did take notice that this morning with George Stephanopus, he didn't take sides in Ukraine; instead he spoke of treaty obligations to Poland. That's good. I would've liked to hear him coming out against arming the terrorists (aka Obama's "friendly rebels") who are killing Christians in Syria.
One thing that's real good is Stephanopolous asked Cruz tough direct questions, for sure, but he no longer seemed to be trying to marginalize him.
His Reagan toughness will be needed to overcome you Russian surrender monkeys.
Putin former LTC, I think we have one too, who would be tough like him, and he wouldn’t be accused by the Press as being a racist Republican. Loose cannon, Uncle Tom, maybe, but not racist. Its too bad the RINOs didn’t support him when he was a candidate for HR, and changed his district lines to keep him from getting it. I’ve had it with the silk stocking RINO Republicans. The only candidates for President chosen by the RINOs are the ones falsely promoted by the Media. When will they learn that the Media is not their friend?
“What has he done that shows that he has the executive experience to run the government? I agree with him on major issues and enjoy watching him take on the left, but that doesnt mean he knows how to be president.”
Well, based on who we’ve had since Ronald Reagan, I’D vote for a trained chimpanzee over most of the “Republican Bench” as quoted by Rancid Prius. And that’s not factoring in the “It’s My Turn Loosers” like Dole, McLame and Mittens.
My worry is that Cruz, like a lot of conservative senators and representatives, doesn't understand that the President proposes ideas and Congress should then act on what they see as appropriate (within the confines of the Constitution).
Actually the POTUS should be the Branch of government that only enforces the laws Congress makes, because POTUS is the executive.
Regarding whether a Senator can be an effective and proper POTUS, yes. Being President does not actually require managerial experience, rather a sensible ability to pick good assistants who do have managerial experience, be honest and honorable with respect the Constitution and the two other Branches of Government with an unwavering desire to do whats best for our Country.
The trouble we now are experiencing, that is coloring everyones perspective, is that nobama does not care what his assistants do or how they do it, is not an honest or honorable man who does not respect the Constitution nor other Branches and instead is willing to assist in Americas downfall to rebuild it in some progressive socialist fashion. His only being a Senator has nothing to do with how badly he is performing as the Executive.
I am sorry, but I could not be overall comfortable supporting any one of the Governors you named. All may be good conservatives, but none have the true leadership, vision and fearlessness that will be required to right the mess we are in.
