NEW ORLEANS (AP) Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has won the latest 2016 presidential straw poll at a conservative summit in Louisiana.
Cruz took 30 percent of the vote at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans. He edged out conservative speaker and author Ben Carson.
Organizers at the annual conference say about a third out of 1,500 delegates voted in the straw poll. Delegates had to pay to register for the conference and vote in the straw poll.
Cruz promised delegates Saturday to continue his uncompromising approach on Capitol Hill.
Carson did not address delegates before the voting.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Texas Gov. Rick Perry trailed Cruz and Carson in the poll

Why not have them both on the ballot.
Cruz/Carson, they would certainly make a great team.
That would be nice, an America ready to work again instead of RINO votes from laziness. All these liberals pro abort congrat themselves for gaining votes paid by the national debt, driving us to incompetent oblivion.
The 60s are a cancre that will be bloted out one way or another.
Until Carson either straightens himself out on the 2nd Amendment or if he buys a vowel from the Constitutional Wheel of Fortune to help figure it out, the best he can do in any administration I envision is at best Secretary of HHS (and that is a stretch) or simply the Surgeon General.
Carson is a pro-amnesty gun-grabber!
CRUZ CONTROL
I was listening to Reince Preibus on a local talk show the other day and he was commenting on the deep bench that the republicans have in the 2016 race. He was naming potential candidates and the names he came up with were Chris Christie, Paul Ryan, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker. Ted Cruz never figured in his list.
Not trying to start an argument (I am actually curious), but why WOULD Preibus list his name? What are Cruz’ qualifications to do the job of President? What has he done that shows that he has the executive experience to run the government? I agree with him on major issues and enjoy watching him take on the left, but that doesn’t mean he knows how to be president.
I would gladly support Cruz 2016, but I think we’ll need a Conservative woman to win. I don’t wish to promote identity politics, but that’s were we are.
As to his qualifications, I am not going to re-hash what has been posted many times on this forum. One of the other freepers has a bio that I have seen several times.
There is a pattern of promoting and pushing left wing republican candidates who support establishment left wing priorities. This is just another example.
Interesting exercise ... but Senators generally make poor Presidents ... the current pResident makes this statement convincingly.
We have many exceptional governors available ... that is the population from which we should select.
What are his qualifications to be President?
Well, for one, he did exactly what he told his constituents he would do. And he got a hero’s welcome when he returned home. He certainly has excitement on his side.
So did Obama.
Look, I like Senator Cruz. He's a great guy, a great conservative. But he has no executive experience and we have painfully learned over the past 6 years that the presidency is no place for on-the-job training.
Is there not a good conservative governor out there who will throw his hat into the ring?
We need a strong, wise proven constitutional conservative with good instincts in fast-moving events. Everyone in the US knows the country is on the slippery slope to the trash heap of civilizations that self-destructed. The disagreement is about what to do about it.
The US needs a strong father figure that gives us confidence and makes us feel secure. Someone who has a track record for good decisions and voting. That's what will bring voters over to the constitutional conservative side.
A conservative woman (I assume you're promoting Martinez) will not bring over women who want a female pres and have committed to hillary. An attractive, articulate, take-charge guy will. We need an American equivalent of Putin.
“Carson is a pro-amnesty gun-grabber!”......
Guess I was not paying close enough attention.
I thought he was our no-brainer choice until he showed his weakness on foreign policy. He's too much bang-the-drums on world affairs, rather than being the nuanced, analytic and careful force in world affairs who could "play chess with Putin".
He seems to have taken sides on Ukraine. I don't get that....it's not impossible that their civil war could spill over to the US. He didn't demand something dramatic like closing the main road to Mexico to get that marine out of the Mexican jail. Has he spoken out forcefully about the US arming terrorists in Syria (playing too nice with McCain?)
I suspect it's that Cruz's strength isn't foreign affairs. I just wonder if there's anyone since Dan Quayle who's had those skills.
Not just yes, but HELL yes!
The problem with the Obama presidency is NOT a problem of LACK OF EXPERIENCE.
The problem with the Obama presidency is THE DIRECTION OF HIS POLICIES.
Obama has been VERY SUCCESSFUL at doing exactly what he said he was going to do: fundamentally change the United States.
His use of executive agencies to usurp power and subvert and destroy the Constitution has been nothing short of MASTERFUL.
So please, don't give me any of that experience crap. I hate that argument. Obama had no experience, and essentially has no leadership skills, but with the POWER OF THE PRESIDENCY he was able to perform deep surgery on the American System and effect profound (and to anyone who loves freedom and America, horrible) change. Did he do it all himself? Of course not. He's a little faggot pin-up boy. But he's got the power. And he's got his friends. And his power and his friends have worked amazing changes (evil changes) in America.
The only way we can counter those changes is to elect someone who is truly conservative. Mitt Frickin Romney had "experience". And what a dufus he was. And what a dufus president he would have been.
