The popular notion that urine is sterile is a myth, new research finds.
Yes, the myth that comes up every time someone pees in a pool (or drinking water reservoir) is actually false. In fact, bacteria do live in urine, Loyola University researchers reported this week at the general meeting of the American Society for Microbiology in Boston. "We need to reassess everything we think we know about urine," study researcher Evann Hilt, a graduate student at Loyola, told Live Science.

Okay, that's funny, but still-- it's 2014 and we're just getting around to finding that there are bacteria living in urine??????
"They found whole swaths of bacteria not detected before in healthy urine, simply because no one had ever looked."
Let me guess, the sterile urine theory was settled science?
If you read this article, urine big trouble.

You used all caps when you should have been quietly reassessing what you knew about urine.
I truly worry about the state of modern science when the — gasp! — discovery of bacteria in human urine is a shocking surprise worthy of newspaper headlines.
I always figured that if my body got rid of it, there was something in there that was not healthy for me.
Exactly!
We need to reassess everything we know about most everything. Settled science indeed!
So does this mean surgeons will have to stop scrubbing up before surgery with urine?
a healthy kidney should not release bacteria. but one could have an infected bladder and you can get bacteria from that venue. then there are kidney that are NOT 100% and all bets are off.
now even if the kidney’s ultrafiltration system is 100% and one has no infections downstream. Viruses are small enough to pass through the filter. so urine will not block AIDS or Hepititis.
Wasn’t that settled science?
Next thing you know they’ll be telling us boogers aren’t nutritious.

Someone thought urine was sterile?
I always forget just how stupid a person can be.
Kenya-- I kid you not!!
Extremely misleading headline.
It should be, “Urine is Usually Sterile, but not Always.”
But then, we’ve known that all along.
