Sidenote: Credited to Robbie Robertson of The Band, the opening is a Garth Hudson invention based on Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" with nonsense lyrics originally improvised by Levon Helm and Richard Manuel. It was from The Band's first album without Bob Dylan, Music from Big Pink, but was popularized on Three Dog Night's debut in 1968. The Band opened their set at Woodstock in August of 1969 with the song, but at the time many people assumed they were covering a Three Dog Night song. It was a staple of 3DN live shows in 1969 when they were Steppenwolf's opening act and a showcase for organist Jimmy Greenspoon.

Sidenote: Composed by Galt MacDermot, James Rado & Gerome Ragni for the rock musical "Hair", Three Dog Night covered and popularized the song on their second album Suitable for Framing in 1969. It rocketed to #2 on the Canadian Singles Chart and #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
The album contains the top 20 hit singles "Easy to Be Hard", "Eli's Coming", and "Celebrate"; the latter of which (along with the album's opening track "Feelin' Alright") featured the fledgling Chicago Transit Authority horn section. It was also notable for being the first album by Three Dog Night to include songs written by band members, and for its inclusion of the Elton John song "Lady Samantha," as Elton John would not become widely known in the United States until 1970.
Suitable for Framing was well received in North America, reaching the top 10 on the main albums charts in Canada and the United States and became certified gold by the RIAA by the end of the year.

Sidenote: While this two and a half minutes are only excerpts from Floyd Sneed's 20 minute + drum solo, it does give a brief tease of why Joe Schermie thought he was hearing more than one drummer that night on the Sunset Strip. It's poorly conceived and horribly produced imho, but I do give the band credit for featuring "Frosty" on a studio album and letting him share some royalties.

Sidenote: Written and sung by Danny Hutton who had been a songwriter and singer for Hanna-Barbera Records from 1965-1966, this was the first Three Dog Night "original". Hutton had enjoyed a modest national hit, "Roses and Rainbows," during his tenure as a recording artist for Hanna-Barbera Records which provided songs for Hanna-Barbera's animation studio's stable of Saturday morning cartoon shows which dominated American television animation for nearly four decades. Danny had paid his dues writing songs for The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, The Jetsons, Quick Draw McGraw, Huckleberry Hound and Scooby-Doo. It was Danny who came up with and pitched the concept of three lead vocalists and his then-girlfriend, June Fairchild suggested the name after reading a magazine article about indigenous Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground whilst embracing a dingo (a native species of wild dog). On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and if the night was freezing, it was a "three dog night".
