Sidenote: The second single from It Ain't Easy written by Randy Newman turned out to be Three Dog's Night's first #1 on the U.S. Billboard chart, #2 in Canada and perhaps more importantly #3 in the UK, #12 in Germany and #14 in the Netherlands. 3DN had broken the International bubble and embarked on their first World Tour.

We spoke on the phone for a long time this morning. His dad is going down there tomorrow and I’ll go down Tuesday for his SOI graduation, then he’s gone for two or three months (I can’t remember) to N.C.

Sidenote: Striking while the iron was hot, Three Dog Night released their second studio album of 1970, their 4th studio album in total and their 5th album since their debut in 1968. At the time, this amount of material in the record bins in such a short time span was almost unprecedented outside of supergroups like Cream that had already disbanded by late 1970. Not only was Three Dog Night managing to not oversaturate the market, demand just kept growing and the hits kept on coming. This first single from Naturally hit the Billboard charts thanks to writers Billy Fox, January Tyme and legendary producer Thomas Jefferson Kaye.

Sidenote: Written by Pentti Glan, Roy Kenner, Hugh Sullivan and Domenic Troiano here's another 3DN song that owes it's relentless groove to drummer Floyd Sneed. Troiano & Kenner were Canadians best known for their work with the bands Mandala and the later days of The James Gang.

Sidenote: This instrumental was written by 3DN band members Mike Allsup, Jimmy Greenspoon, Joe Schermie and Floyd Sneed. The jam was designed to give Wells, Negron and Hutton a breather and a chance for a costume change during live shows and though it was clearly "filler" for the hastily produced album, I'm sure the guys in the backup band appreciated the royalty checks from the Gold certified album.

Sidenote: This song was written by Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group/Traffic/Blind Faith) and legendary producer Jimmy Miller who is best known for producing The Rolling Stones and The Spencer Davis Group including their breakthrough hit "Gimme Some Lovin'" and the follow-up smash "I'm A Man," which Miller co-wrote with Winwood. He also produced several successful albums for Winwood's groups Traffic and the only Blind Faith album. A drummer himself, Miller was known for the distinctive drum sound that characterized his productions, especially his work with the Rolling Stones, on whose recordings he occasionally played percussion parts such as the famous opening cowbell on "Honky Tonk Women" and the full drum kit on "You Can't Always Get What You Want," "Happy," "Tumbling Dice" and "Shine a Light." He also produced a string of singles and albums for The Rolling Stones that rank among the most critically and financially successful works of the band's career including: Beggars Banquet (1968), Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971), Exile on Main Street (1972) and Goats Head Soup. (1973).

Can't Get Enough Of It

Sidenote: Penned by American singer / songwriter and founding member of The Youngbloods, Jesse Colin Young, this ballad gave a nice contrast to the mostly uptempo songs on the Naturally album.
