Inside Putin's Campaign Of Social Media Trolling And Faked Ukrainian Crimes

Vladimir Putin uses an invisible army of social media propagandists, in addition to conventional media, to support his narrative of an out-of-control Ukraine, to spread fabrications of atrocities by Ukrainian extremists, and to unleash destabilizing rumors on east Ukraine. If Ukraine unmasks the myths of Russia’s disinformation war, Putin’s target audiences, at home and abroad, must eventually reject his whole narrative.

[....] This photo circulated unquestioned, until the KyivPost (See: Moscow journalist says there was no pregnant woman in Odessa Trade Unions Building) reported its debunking by a media reviewer from Moscow, Elena Rybkovtseva. In her investigation, Rybkovtseva began with the question of why there was still no information about the deceased pregnant woman, no mourning relatives, no distraught father-to-be, and no one in the receiving hospital remembering a pregnant victim. When Rybkovsteva showed the receiving doctor the photo, “he immediately said it was clearly an elderly woman who was photographed, for some reason, here in such a pose, likely in order to create the needed effect.” The physician called higher medical authorities, who confirmed there was no pregnant woman among the dead.

[....]

It should be noted that Mr. Putin, as a young KGB officer in Berlin, was not an intelligence agent but a disinformation specialist who ran informant networks. He is just putting what he learned in his younger days to use, only now as the head of a nation.

The pro-Putin anti-Ukrainian posters on Freerepublic used some of these same fraudulent photographs and false Russian narratives just yesterday. Note the faked photo story of the pregnant woman.

I don’t know how anyone can defend what went on in that Odessa Trade Unions Building. Freakin animals.

Plenty of it going on from both sides.

After all, only a real moron would believe that only one side is doing it.

What those side with Kiev can’t defend is its repression in the East.

The Ukies say the referendums in Donetsk and Lugansk will have “no legal consequences.” But they do send a moral and a political message.

The Maidan regime is viewed as illegitimate by over half the population. It and its Western backers can brush off today’s vote as illegitimate all they want.

But what is clear is Ukraine is headed for a breakup if they do not soon come to their senses.

I have no doubt that Russia uses social media trolling and fake stories to further its agenda in Ukraine and elsewhere. But we don't? The fact is that a major propaganda war is being waged on all sides, and hard facts are difficult to verify. This is true in any civil war, but especially so in Ukraine with all of the competing outside interests (USA, EU, NATO and Russia) whose hands are in the game.

All parties are treating Ukraine as if it was Armageddon. But the only outside player that has a strategic defensive interest in Ukraine is Russia due to its exposed southern flank. To the West, the play for Ukraine was a long shot chance to plant NATO's flag and dominate the Black Sea and Russia's military industrial center. The side that prevails will be the one to whom control of Ukraine is most vital, and that is Russia.

Ukraine will not break up easily unless you believe the pervasive Russian disinformation. One recent article mentioned a car that was stopped and searched that already had thousands of ballots already stamped in favor of separation.

The interim government’s use of the army has been one of the factors that has thrown a kink into Putin’s plans. A woman from Luhansk who returned from vacation saw that the local drunks and criminals now have AK47s. What we’re seeing is a criminal enterprise, the Russian government, reacting to the debacle of their partners in crime, the previous Ukrainian administration headed by Yanukovych.

That’s a new one on me. when was Ukraine offered membership in NATO? As far as dominating the Black Sea, Turkey controls the Bosporus.

NATO membership was not offered to Ukraine, nor Georgia.

Van Rompuy: If The Public Doesn't Want EU Expansion, 'We Do It Anyway'

Like the Western Powers at Versailles in 1919, the NATO countries thought they could write the next century's history and greatly overreached, forgetting that the fortunes of both sides are transient. NATO shifted from a defensive alliance united against Soviet invasion to an offensive bloc intent on dominating its vanquished former enemy. NATO's rapid expansion to Russia's borders has alarmed Moscow, and is arousing old tensions. It seems that only the losers learn from history.

What you are suggesting is a criminal act of irredentism and criminal war of aggression by Russia outlawed 86 years ago. There is and can be no excuse whatsoever for the murderously criminal acts of Russia and its leadership. The Ukraine has a right to its sovereignty, independence, and freedom of association. Russia guaranteed that right in the Budapest memorandum 1994. You cannot blame NATO or anyone else for Russia’s criminal conduct.

I don’t know what the heck Russia was thinking when they gave up Crimea in the first place. That’s like us giving up California. We would retake it at some point because we need the ports.

Sums it up, perfectly.

So, shooting down unarmed civilians who disagree with the kiev coup, using the NKVD-like Right Sector is ok with you??

PS- Anybody with a BRAIN knew the Budapest Memo wasn’t worth the paper it was printed on, way back then. Bill Clinton cannot/could not be trusted.

Anything that Russia signs is “not worth the paper it is printed on”.

Which is why it is so disgusting seeing “conservatives” falling for the Russian illegal annexation and illegal invasion of Ukraine.
