Paul Diverges From His Party Over Voter ID
NYTIMES.COM ^ | MAY 9, 2014 | JEREMY W. PETERS

Posted on 05/10/2014 8:46:41 AM PDT by FreeAtlanta

Senator Rand Paul broke with fellow Republicans by saying that the focus on stricter voting laws to crack down on fraud alienates African-Americans and hurts the party.

“Everybody’s gone completely crazy on this voter ID thing,” Mr. Paul said in an interview. “I think it’s wrong for Republicans to go too crazy on this issue because it’s offending people.” ... “The bigger issue actually is whether you get to vote if you have a felony conviction,” he said. “There’s 180,000 people in Kentucky who can’t vote. And I don’t know the racial breakdown, but it’s probably more black than white because they’re convicted felons. And I’m for getting their right to vote back, which is a much bigger deal than showing your driver’s license.” ... Mr. Paul becomes the most prominent member of his party — and among the very few — to distance himself from the voting restrictions and the campaign for their passage in states under Republican control, including North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin, that can determine presidential elections. Civil rights groups call the laws a transparent effort to depress black turnout.

> I wonder why the “African-Americans” have a problem with showing an I.D. Something stinks here. What are they up to?

Maybe they have some outstanding warrants because they didn’t appear in court for EBT fraud that the “man” filed against them to keep them down?

It’s funny how whitey doesn’t seem to have a problem with showing a voter I.D. According to the (WHITE) politicians, it’s only the “African Americans” who are “offended” by it. Hmmmmm.

Great point. I never thought of that. Arrest warrants.

Rand Paul is losing ground fast.

Slip sliding away,
slip sliding away
You know the nearer your destination,
the more you're slip sliding away

Rand Paul is just another Ron Paul.

Like his father, he is a libertarian without principles.

Or, if you like, just that one basic, selfish libertarian principle: “whatever I want, I get, and nothing can stop me.”

The problem is the ungratefulness African-Americans have for the Republican Party. 400,000 Republicans died in a war to free their ancestors (opposed by Democrats and Whigs, aka, Moderate Republicans). Hundreds more Republicans were harrassed and murdered by the Democrat Military and Domestic Terrorist Arm the KKK.

It was Republicans who helped push the 1965 Civil Rights Act. It was Republican Ronald Reagan who created the economic powerhouse that put AFrican-Americans in the Middle Class (I remember growing up in Mississippi in the 1960s...unless they were a preacher or Mortician, blacks lived in run-down shotgun shacks. In the 1980's they started living in good solid homes in fine neighborhoods).

How does the Black community repay the blood sweat and tears? By turning their back on those who helped them the most, while running into the arms of those whose ancestors murdered their men and raped their women. Every black man and black woman in America needs to clothe themselves in sackcloth and ashes for what they've done to the Republicans.

The reason is simple - when fraud is taking place, voters are discouraged and the vote of honest folks is suppressed.

Everyone is concerned about the “chilling effect” requiring ID supposedly causes. Nobody considers the chilling effect fraud has on honest folks.

Are you more or less likely to engage in a game of chance if you know it’s rigged? Are you more or less likely to watch a sporting event if you know it is rigged? (WWE fans are exempt from this question) Are you more or less likely to vote if you know the guy behind you has already voted twice? AND if you know the authorities don’t care...you are even less likely to vote, because you feel impotent.

Suppose you knew the guy behind you was voting for the third time, and mentioned it to the poll officials and they said, “yeah, we know, but we don’t want to cause a fuss”. I know I would walk out in protest.

How many in the black community know about the fraud taking place? Probably most of them, and it keeps the honest ones at home.

I really hate that Paul is lining up like this. I had a lot of hope for him.

“I wonder why the “African-Americans” have a problem with showing an I.D. Something stinks here. What are they up to?”

I don’t believe most black people do, it’s their leaders, the democrats and other socialist who “speak for all”. When I was circulating the Voter ID Petition in Mississippi the blacks I presented it to were as likely to sign as anyone else. Most people understand and respond to it being about “one legal voter, one legal vote”.

“What are they up to?” Of course we know those who object to it are the ones who believe they are entitled to steal the close elections.

Well I used to be LEO and whenever I would question someone and ask to see their DL and they had an outstanding warrant either they would act like they were trying to find it and couldn’t, would smack their heads and say I left my wallet at home, or even try to show a fake ID or someone else’s they lifted, especially if they were involved in ID theft / credit card abuse cases. The vast majority of them were black that offered resistance and they weren’t questioned because they were black; it was usually because of suspicious activity and where they were, the time of night, the reputation of the neighborhood, plus the fact that they generally run around and party a lot in general. It wasn’t because I was being racist.

I’m willing to listen to what Rand Paul has to say about this subject.

Why do Blacks oppose showing ID? It makes no sense at all why this upsets African Americans. What’s the big deal about showing ID? Do they all vote 5 or 6 times and don’t want to give that up? I doubt it. They seem to take this very seriously, maybe we should too, and find out what it’s all about.

Dialog never hurt anyone. It can’t hurt to show them (African Americans) that we (Republicans) are willing to listen.

OK, if this quote is verifiable, I no longer supprt RP in any way/shape/form and will militate against him (yes, militate is the right term)in all venues.

(On corroboration) Rand Paul is not a patriot and should be shunned and treated as a tax collector and prostitute. Oh...wait...he’s in WashDC; I am redundant.

Bravo, bears repeating.

I am with you 100%. Rand Paul is just another pandering evil Statist.

This not the first time that Rand Paul has made statements that appear to intentionally separate him from conservative Republicans. He appears to be be posturing as the Republican antidote, neither conservative, nor mainstream.

Is it really worthwhile to have a dialogue when we already know the answers? Democrats oppose these laws because they make it harder to cheat. Blacks believe anything the Democrats tell them. Not much to really flesh out through talking.

Obviously, Senator Paul is trying to win in New Hampshire, where Democrats, "Independents" and people from Taxachusetts decide who wins that State's presidential primary.

He can kiss South Carolina goodbye, or did he already do that?

I suspect the Senator really believes this, but this issue has a lot to do with Thom Tillis winning the North Carolina senatorial primary, Tuesday.

Paul needs to stop talking

He needs to stop running.

At least until he announces as a Democrat, which is what I think he plans to do.

Everything he has said that runs contrary to conservativism has been said calculatedly, at least IMHO.

Paul isn't a conservative, isn't even a Republican but is running as a pro-drug, pro-amnesty, anti-capitalist, ant-defense panderer.

Paul = the white Obama.
