Mexico’s government plans on Saturday to begin demobilizing a vigilante movement of assault rifle-wielding ranchers and farmers that formed in the western state of Michoacan and succeeded in largely expelling the Knights Templar cartel when state and local authorities couldn’t.

The ceremony in the town of Tepalcatepec, where the movement began in February 2013, will involve the registration of thousands of guns by the federal government and an agreement that the so-called “self-defense” groups will either join a new official rural police force or return to their normal lives and acts as voluntary reserves when called on.

The government will go town by town to organize and recruit the new rural forces. …

Good luck with that. Considering that the cartels have millions of dollars at their disposal and an army with the latest weapons at hand, I can’t see an army of farmers defeating them. Too little, too late.

an army of farmers could....they are protecting their very lives and the lives of their wives and children....something about passion as opposed to mercenary...

however, bad idea to write your name down on any list....some traitor imposter on the "police force" could use the list as a hit list....

Those millions of dollars and arsenal are really only good in concentrated areas. If the cartels had to continually attack and defend itself on a countrywide basis, the effort would wear itself down.

Unless the cartels are willing to make examples of entire towns or counties, this could eventually be successful.

God Bless ‘em if the Mexicans can clean up their own country, and rule of law can return, then possibly they can start to have a better economy and stop coming here just to live off our welfare state.

We need to do the same thing here. It’s Holder and his people who are the cartel here though...

Nothing like making a list of people who can be "visited" in the early morning hours.

A license to hunt other humans? Not sure it’s ever too late for that. Not that it’s my kinda thing.

The real name for these “vigilantes” —

the militia.

The US Founding Fathers vindicated again.

Oh, they got the head of the cartel as I had read a while back.

Prior posters are spot-on though, the “gun registration” is going to serve as a disarmament list and reprisal sheet...

Could just be political theater. Politicians have to be seen as “doing something”.

I’ve got a feeling those “vigilantes” are not going to be quick turning over their firearms for registration or confiscation.

It almost sounds as if the police had been bought off by a competitor of the guy who was taken out.

I agree with your second thought.

“The ceremony ... will involve the registration of thousands of guns by the federal government and an agreement that the so-called “self-defense” groups will either join a new official rural police force or return to their normal lives”

“This is a process of giving legal standing to the self-defense forces,” said vigilante leader Estanislao Beltran.”

Odd way of putting it. Sounds to me like the corrupt Mexican government that’s been in the pockets of the local cartels all along are simply trying to disarm the good guys and get them on a list so the cartels will know who to kill.

Is Mexico going to legalize citizen firearms ownership? Didn't think so.

Someone is going to regret this farce if they surrender, register and comply.
