Thank you for contacting our office regarding H.R. 2377, the Encourage New Legalized Immigrants to Start Training (ENLIST) Act. I appreciate hearing from you and value your thoughts.
Our current immigration system is broken and inspires confidence in no one. We must have border security that is real and verifiable, an internal security system that addresses the large problem of visa overstays, and a mandatory E-Verify system to ensure employers hire American workers or legal immigrants.
Our country deserves an immigration system that is accountable and not subject to the vagaries of whether a President chooses to enforce the law or not. The House is committed to pursuing a step-by-step approach to reform in order to thoroughly examine each facet in detail and ensure the debate is transparent and accountable to the American public.
Our country has a long history of extending citizenship to immigrants who serve in the military and risk their lives for the country. To this end, I am a cosponsor of H.R. 2377. This bill allows immigrants who were brought to the U.S. before the age of 15 and prior to 2011 and to enlist in the Armed Forces. This bill allows individuals who meet the high standards of the military to enlist, fulfill a 5-year commitment, and receive no less than an honorable service designation to be conditionally lawfully admitted to the US for permanent residence.
This bill does not confer citizenship. Rather it acknowledges the mutual desire that those who were brought to this country before the age of legal accountability and desire to serve this country in uniform should have an opportunity to do so.
Thank you again for contacting our office. We hope you will let us know if we can ever be of assistance to you.
Sincerely,
Trey Gowdy Member of Congress
Eh... why do these people keep saying this is a “broken system?” Why do they keep saying we “need a path to citizenship” WHEN WE ALREADY HAVE ONE!!!
Actually, in addition to immigration laws already on the books, the MILITARY citizenship offer makes sense to me. My major concern with waives of immigrants is their patriotism and loyalty.
Doesn’t the military help in that regard?
Great. An Army of Mexicans with an axe to grind about the Gringos taking “their land”.
Guess it’ll make the BLM’s job easier when they need to throw some more white people off their land. Oops, I mean, El Tierra de Mexico Norte.
This bill DOES NOT confer citizenship. Rather it acknowledges the mutual desire that those who were brought to this country before the age of legal accountability and desire to serve this country in uniform should have an opportunity to do so.
I agree with the military route, but not the college route.
As for the rest of the illegal alien problem...
Do those things and illegal aliens will deport themselves and pay for the trip.
“Our current immigration system is broken....”
.
It was broken by LBJ and no succeeding president nor congress has ever made an attempt to fix it.
It’ll take a miracle and closure of our borders to solve the problem and neither event is likely to happen.
Thanks for the FYI on traitor Trey Gowdy!

By Trey Gowdy caving in to the Doormat Republican Leadership in the House that Boehner wrecked, is evidence enough that Trey thinks that the National Republican Party is going to “have a fair shot,” (fav. Obama expression), at gaining any of the votes of the 11 to 30 million Illegal Alien Invaders from Mexico.
WRONG! These 30 million “un-registered Democrat voters” are from the corrupt, Socialist Country of Mexico, and thus will be naturally drawn to what they are used to: the corrupt, Socialist, US Democrat Party.
This is the third most destructive program that Obama has on his “ram-it-down-their-throats-while-we-can” plan to “Fundamentally transform the United States of America.”
Wars have started over lesser issues - - - - .
The scary part is that Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, McCarthy, Issa and now traitor Gowdy are so detached from Reality that they truly believe that helping Obama and Reid ram Amnesty for Illegal Alien Invaders from Mexico down our throats will magically be good for the Republican Party, and not just the Doormat Wing of the Republican Party.
[Note to Republicans: Give us Conservatives even just ONE reason to vote FOR you. Convince us that there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats.]
The Reality is that from the Reagan-Kennedy Grand Amnesty Deal of 1986 until tomorrow, US politicians on “both sides of the aisle” refuse to enforce existing US Border Laws.
Thanks for nothing Trey! Have a nice life.
It is time, - - - time for a change.
Correction: “is no difference” changed to “is A difference.” Sorry.
It was broken by LBJ abetted by Ted Swimmer Kennedy.
Both are dead but that doesn’t solve anything.
“Help us, Obi Cruz Kenobe, you’re our only hope.”
I’ve heard Gowdy mealy mouthing about immigration more than once. He usually mentions that BMW and a few other major firms are in his district, talks about the need for workers and says very little about details.
I’m afraid he’s just another closet amnesty supporter and nothing is more irritating than the ones who hide behind the ridiculous notion that they will legalize illegals, but never allow them to become citizens.
And with all the cutbacks in the military, I doubt we’ll have slots for all American citizens who hope to join in the future. NO slots should be allotcated to anyone who came here illegally, or who was brought here illegally no matter their age.
They shouldn’t even considered as long as recruitment quotas can be filled by US citizens.
And I agree with that. If people are willing to serve, that goes a long way with me. My problem is with this constant assertion that our system is broken. I don’t agree with that. Are there things that could need a tweak or two? Yes, as there are with many of our systems, or any system for that matter. I am a huge fan of Gowdy. I just have grown weary of the whole “broken” thing. There is “broken” and then there are “areas which need improvement.”
“We must have border security that is real and verifiable...”
___
“Real and verifiable” border security should be the 1st step in a multi-step immigration reform and should be a stand-alone bill. Once step 1 is completed then move on to step 2 which should deal with the disposition of those already here illegally. You must repair the dam before you can address the problems caused by it having been breached.
He thinks with his haircut, his background prosecuting and his big talk that he is some sort of badass, fringe, silver fox Conservative.
Gowdy said Jeff Denham needs workers to pick asparagus. Are the Mexican Nationals and illegals to lazy to pick? Did Gowdy go to Denham’s district? I don’t believe he did. I don’t think he’d travel that far to just look at some asparagus rotting in the fields.
Gowdy compares not enforcing immigration law to not enforcing laws against children who eat grapes. I think a lack of immigration enforcement is a bigger problem.

Gowdy also took offense at Kings criticism during the hearing of the South Carolinians own comments about needing a permanent immigration law solution.
Did you hear his five minutes? Gowdy asked a scrum of reporters about Kings statement. He took one line from my opening statement about a remedy that lasts a lifetime and lectures me about the rule of law. I was a prosecutor for 15 years.
