Good evening, Mayor! Thank you very much for today's Daily Bread.
On a somewhat different note, but relevant, it is my understanding that the Marine Corps War Memorial sculpture by Felix de Weldon, depicting the five Marines and one Navy Corpsman who raised the Flag over Mt. Suribachi, includes thirteen hands hoisting the Flag.
I believe Rembrandt and de Weldon had the same thing in mind.
He is with us always!

Watching my son and his fellow cadets is wonderful. You will never find a nicer, smarter, or more polite group of young people. We have spent days wandering around the campus, and everywhere you look there is history. Classes going back over a hundred years planted class trees, and at the base is a small stone marker with a year chiseled into it - the class year. The museum is fantastic, and the library is incredible. When we were there for Plebe Parent weekend, they had the minutes from the honor court (still held in Ninninger Hall) that kicked Edgar Allen Poe out!

It's wonderful to see you back, Lauren - it has been much too long since we have had the pleasure of your company. I know you've been "chained to the desk" and we are most fortunate to have your threads posted by Kathy, God Bless her!

That particular painting was stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardiner Museum in Boston about 40 years ago, and has never been recovered.
There were other Rembrandts, some Degas, and others stolen in the heist, but this was the profoundest loss, as it was one the only paintings Rembrandt did involving the Sea..

That is no surprise to me, SD - I come from a military family. As a veteran, I have visited bases from time to time and have always been most gratified by the reception I have received.
I have great faith in the skill, professionalism and Patriotism of our serving Troops. In the civilians who command them - not so much.
Godspeed your son as he embarks on his service to our Nation!

Good evening, ML!
*HUGS*
Did not know that! What an outrage!
Sadly, there will always be those who will take or destroy that which the greatest among us will create. I once had a hand-spun calendar in my kitchen with pictures of Pennsylvania Covered Bridges, one of which stands over the Conodoguinet Creek next to a farm that my Father used to own. It has been thirty-five years since I drove over that bridge, and I do not know whether it still stands. Mpst of the bridges depicted on that calendar are gone.
The calendar bears the legend "The hands and brains of soulless men / Destroy what time will never build again."
How apropos in this beniohted time!

The Gardiner Museum was a treasure and part of Boston’s heritage. I spent many hours there as a child. Mrs. Jack (Isabella Stewart Gardiner) had never been accepted by Boston’s Blue Blood society, but she was very rich, so she had the Palace imported from Venice, stone by stone, and rebuilt in Boston’s Back Bay. She filled it with the world’s best art, and left in her will that it was for The People of Boston to Enjoy.
So all us “Hoi polloi” got to enjoy Rembrandt and other wonderful art for free.
I think there is a small fee now, probably to pay for security.
