Summertime Sadness? Fears of a Runoff in North Carolina (golly gee, no bias here!)

North Carolina Republican Senate contender Greg Brannon is a first-time candidate for public office who has flirted with conspiracy theories about the Sept. 11 attacks, suggested the mentally ill have the right to bear arms and is being sued for allegedly misleading investors about a startup company he founded.

Yet in just over a week, when voters trek to the polls in the Tar Heel State’s GOP primary, Brannon has a realistic shot at a victory, if not a victory in the traditional sense. The tea party-backed obstetrician certainly won’t capture the most votes next Monday, but he needs just enough to finish second while keeping establishment favorite North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis under the 40 percent threshold necessary to move on to the general election.

Democratic state Sen. Kay Hagan speaks during a campaign event Sept. 29, 2008, in Charlotte, N.C. Four GOP candidates are vying for a chance to unseat incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan.

Simply advancing to the July 15 runoff for a mano-a-mano matchup with Tillis would be a win for the insurgent Brannon. But that scenario could imperil GOP hopes of flipping the seat held by Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C. – a race that’s close to a must-win for the party if they are to claw back the Senate majority in the fall.

A poll by SurveyUSA released last week found Tillis surging to 39 percent, falling just short of the required marker. While an outright victory looks within reach, most Republicans are still girding for the nomination fight to head into overtime.

“I think everyone is holding out hope that won’t happen,” says Rep. Renee Ellmers, R-N.C., of the runoff. “It’s an unfortunate thing. It’s very real.”

We have the sober, reliable, groomed, polished, common-sense, pragmatic, go-along candidate AGAINST THE CRAZY, RIGHT WING LOON OF A CANDIDATE!!!!!

And then, if Tillis the establishment guy gets the nomination, we'll have the sober, reliable, common-sense, pragmatic, experienced incumbent Senator Kay Hagan AGAINST THE CRAZY RIGHT WING LOON OF A CANDIDATE, THOM TILLIS!!!!

This is how the game is played. So we might as well go for broke and have the real thing, instead of getting another Liddy Dole or Richard Burr, who will give the democrats (though McConnell) a vote when they need one.

Contribute to the Brannon campaign to stop this stupid game. The last ten days of a campaign are very important to getting the message out, because some people aren’t paying attention until then.

Early voting has already started.

A reminder: Independents can vote for Brannon in the Republican primary.

From one CINO (Amnesty Ellmers) to another (ObummerCare Tillis). CINOs of a feather flock together.

Holy crap! Are you freakin’ kidding me? “It’s an unfortunate thing” that the American people vote their conscience instead of falling in step with the Party power-brokers? This witch needs to be targeted for defeat next go-around.

And don’t forget to vote for Jeanette Doran in the Supreme Court race. Or at least anyone except Robin Hudson.

She’s being targeted now. She has a primary opponent named Roach.

My instinct still remains, if conservatives take back the Senate by say 1 or 2 seats, McCain will switch parties and take 2 or 3 of his cronies with him.

The win must be huge IMO!

Collins will probably become an independent too, like Jeffords did. And Brown if he’s the nominee and wins New Hampshire.
