It wasn't personal, they say - the students just didn't want to share their big day with the First Lady and deal with the security headaches that hosting a big name speaker would entail. More than 1,750 of them had signed a petition protesting Obama's appearance at the graduation ceremony because security concerns would have limited the number of friends and family they could invite.
Via The Hill:
Instead of delivering a graduation speech, Obama will speak before the school district the day before graduation, and will deliver remarks at a "Senior Recognition Day."

In a statement to The Hill, the first lady's communications director said Obama wanted to accommodate all who hoped to attend the graduation ceremony.
"Once we learned about the concerns of some students, we were eager to find a solution that enabled all of the students and their families to celebrate the special day," she told the wire service.
The first lady's address is meant to commemorate the anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education desegregation ruling.

Dude, it ain’t jo money no mo’.
Well, yes. It is the stuff of life, you know.
As I have said before, the local government administration idiots who thought it would be a great idea to invite either the POTUS or the First Lady to speak at a joint 5 school graduation ceremony went beyond merely stupid.
The onus is on them, and I think the locals should demand their names, publically denounce them, and look at firing all of them.
And hildabeaste ran away from San Diego.
“Shucks, I am gonna guess this will be the last time Michelle tries to set foot in our FAIR STATE again.”
But I’d bet she’d win a Blue Ribbon in the cattle barn if she visits your STATE FAIR!! :)
I was laughing so hard I was coughing uncontrollably.
And the prospect of the Secret Service placing the school & its environs under total guns-shoved-in-your-face lockdown didn’t help, either.
I thought my graduation class of 525 was a large one. 1750 is huge.
What the hell, they’re getting Sibelius back, they should have thrills running up and down their little legs....
Not only could many family members be unable to attend, Mou-chelle would have packed the (very small convention center, by Obama standards) with gub'mint state union workers as well as the entire Democrat Party of Kansas, her usual cast of thousands traveling companions (so she will always have fawning groupies to gaze upon her), Secret Service, etc so there probably wouldn't even be room for the graduating seniors from the five (5) Topeka high schools!
Even with the Obama voting families from Topeka, who'd otherwise be thrilled to be in the presence of their Queen-Bee, would still like to attend their own kid's graduation and not be forced to listen to her "really BIG thighness" drone on about Brown v. Board of Education, being the great cause of being proud of her country, oops, not the reason of her pride, but I digress.
She probably also got the potential head count of how many they could crowd in that venue and decided the small venue and crowd just wasn't up to a woman of her stature.
This is, after all, Kansas!
Perhaps the Secret Service did not want to have to wear raincoats to protect them from the rotten tomatoes which would be thrown at this hostile commie wife of an incompetent
husband best known as bathhouse barry.
Good one! Ha Ha!!!
He He he..
I am the very model of a modern funny FReeper!
Leni
I highly doubt it.
Seb will become a DC lobbyist/consultant making 10x what she did for the fedgov.
I wonder if the school will provide party planners?
LOL she has rescheduled.
