Spring 2014 has been a quiet tornado season thus far, but that's about to change this weekend, if the predicted forecasts that meteorologists are looking at hold true.
Weather experts say conditions are lining up for a series of powerful tornadoes to hit an area ranging between Tennessee and Texas from Saturday through Monday. The National Weather Service predicts a "significant multi-day severe event" in the South plains on Sunday, moving into the Mississippi Valley on Monday.

Looks like springtime in Oklahoma. I was attending OU in 1970-1971. We did a lot of amateur storm chasing locally around Norman. There was never a shortage of storms.
Or he stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night...
So what does WeatherBELL (Joe Bastardi) say?
Earthquakes are Jolt, Pause then ROLL.
Ain't nobody "used to" a tornado. Those things scare the beejeebers out of me. And, even if the tornado misses you, the next year's premiums on house insurance will get you.
When those 250+ tornados rumbled through Alabama a couple of years back, we were among those spared. Then, in October, we were spared again. But that following spring, when our insurance came due, the premiums had almost tripled due to our location. Sheesh!
I would rather have earthquakes.
Exactomundo.
Don't forget the humungous CRACK with the jolt.
I don't know which startles me more, the CRACK or the JOLT.
The ROLL is okay as long as it doesn't last more than a five seconds. After that....yikes. Please stop!
THANK you. So would I. The tornadoes, even at 80 mph, would scare the HOLY pie outta me. 250 MPH?!?! I can't even BEGIN to imagine.
Insurance. They ARE the ones who profit, aren't they?
End of lyrical references
(’cuz I dont want to call you “baby”!)
Not Houston.
We had a tornado destroy an apartment complex a mile from our house a few years back.
Saturday is the anniversary of the Andover tornado (April 26, 1991).
I saw a green wall of clouds coming fast. No tornadoes or hail but some seriously gusting winds knocking trees over. I made it back to the garage at work after ~5 min. of dodging fallen trees and rode it out there.
I use my Diesel cars to charge a bank of batteries feeding some inverters. Diesel stores well and keeping a tactical reserve in the compound means I only have to go to the "gas" station every couple of months.
I just have a passion for severe weather...I had travel reservations to leave from California to OKC today to chase this setup, but at the last minute, I pulled the plug because of the uncertainty.
It really looks like the focus has shifted to the Arklatex region for Sunday...and this area is horrendous for chasing storms. In fact a well known chaser just posted this:
WORD OF CAUTION: If you’ve never chased in the south or chased at all, don’t start this weekend. The models are indicating this system is going to be a very fast mover with extremely powerful storms. I’ve heard chatter that even NWS is extremely nervous and SPC has the High Risk ready. The storms are going to be the big boys that kill people. I’m not trying to crush anyone’s dreams but this is going to be a very bad weekend. We’ve stocked extra gear just in case and will be working with FOX6 in Birmingham. The south is full of trees folks. They kill people all the time. Don’t let yourself become a victim. Stay weather aware and keep your weather radio close. Don’t depend on social media to warn you.
Halo66 is right, all the ingredients are coming into place for a major tornado outbreak from Kansas to Tennessee and Mississippi between now and Tuesday. There have been no tornado deaths in the USA up to today, the latest into a year since records have been kept. I hate to say it, but the streak will end within 48 hours of me posting this.
The Storm Prediction Center indicated in their latest outlook for Sunday that they are considering issuing a High Risk in future outlooks. Things will get mighty dangerous from Sunday through Tuesday. If you are in AR, MS, TN, AL, LA, MO...pay close attention to this!!!
