Cliven Bundy Just Ruined His Cause
National Journal ^ | 04/24/2014 | Brian Resnick

After Bundy's overtly racist remarks, let's see how far politicians run away from him.

The New York Times has overheard Cliven Bundy—the Nevada rancher who, instead of paying decades of overdue grazing fees, met the Bureau of Land management with guns and a small militia—saying this:

"I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro," he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, "and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn't have nothing to do. They didn't have nothing for their kids to do. They didn't have nothing for their young girls to do.

"And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?" he asked. "They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I've often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn't get no more freedom. They got less freedom."

Expect every politician to back away from the issue.

"His remarks on race are offensive and I wholeheartedly disagree with him," Sen. Rand Paul said in a statement Thursday morning.

Thing is, just as living on the government dole is not the same lifestyle in every case, being a slave meant different things to different slaves and slave owners.

Some slave owners took a biblical aspect and treated their slaves “almost” like part of the family. They saw them as “employees” for whom they were responsible.

Seriously.

Now, you and I value freedom greatly, but we have also exploited it greatly. There are no small number of people who would give it up for comfort. And there are a LOT of them in our nation.

And what of all the black men in prison?

i.e. this issue is not as black and white as it appears, no pun intended.

I have often wondered if they would choose to have been left in Africa instead of being brought over here as slaves.

Africa is a hell hole and maybe in comparison they would be glad they were brought here. I don’t know, I have never asked the question, I have just wondered it.

There is a book named “Lower River” about Africa that is so awful it killed any desire that I might have had to visit there. That book and the brutality you hear about all the time.

True that... sadly.

“but I see a Ruby Ridge in Bundy’s future”

Well there very well may be another dust up but it won’t be Ruby Ridge with the militia around. It will be rumble in the desert.

“Mr. Bundy is not running for office so he’s free to say whatever he wants.”

The Left’s favorite tactic is to kick civic groups whose agenda they disagree with out of publicly owned property. Best Example is The Boy Scouts not being allowed to meet at public schools or camp in certain public parks. This hits them where it hurts.

Bundy is using public lands for grazing. That is the dispute anyway. But if they can frame him as the leader of some sort of racist-band, then the fence-sitters will get behind a renewed assault on the Bundy Ranch.

This is being used to smear any conservative who showed ANY support of Bundy.

Sometimes it is important to be focussed on ONE issue and to keep your mouth shut on others.
I agree with this statement, especially since the ONE issue he should continue to speak up on is an issue he is an expert on. He is NOT an expert on the effect of the welfare state on people's lives. He has an OPINION about that and his OPINION is not important in any tactical way regarding the main battle he is fighting and his ability to express that opinion is extremely poor. It's probably too late at this point, but my advice to Bundy is, next time you want to express an OPINION about something not germane to the issue of the US government theft of your cattle and land-use rights, I suggest that first you better call Saul.

You’re right of course but because he used the word “Negro” and said they “never learned to pick cotton”, well he’s cooked now.

And while the accusation is abused and overused these days, it is racist to say “they never learned to pick cotton”. Sorry it is.

So let’s not get into defending these comments. Because that’s what the totalitarians want, us to focus on defending the indefensible, while they quietly continue their assault on freedom.

Have they released an unedited recording of him saying it? If not, I have no reason to believe that he said it.

He may have, it is just that the NYT is not a credible source. The Weekly World News stories about Bat Boy are more credible than anything published in the NYT.

“These Negroes, they’re getting pretty uppity these days and that’s a problem for us since they’ve got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we’ve got to do something about this, we’ve got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference.”

They’ve been at it for almost 50 years. So yeah, they’ve had practice.

So someone is a bigot if they point out some people have traded one form of slavery for another? I am tired of this PC bull.... I am tired of paying the freight for the lazy and stupid and then on top of it I can't point anything out about them?

The government, not content to just ruin the black families, now they have made good in roads into destroying white families.

I am a cranky old white person. I never was able to have kids, so it's not my kin that are going to be killed when this place turns into Zimbabwe.

Either we as a political group stand for freedom or we do not. Every time a conservative or freedom loving American does not read the card that the liberals insist we read. Every time we don't toe that line. "We" as the collective NEVER try to defend them we go heat up the tar and grab the feathers.

Rant Over.
