A Defiant Rancher Savors the Audience That Rallied to His Side
NYT ^ | 4/23/14 | Adam Nagourney

BUNKERVILLE, Nev. — Cliven Bundy stood by the Virgin River up the road from the armed checkpoint at the driveway of his ranch, signing autographs and posing for pictures. For 55 minutes, Mr. Bundy held forth to a clutch of supporters about his views on the troubled state of America — the overreaching federal government, the harassment of Western ranchers, the societal upheaval caused by abortion, even musing about whether slavery was so bad.

** snip **

“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

The case can be made without advocating or even musing on chattel slavery. This is not about PC.

Now to read the article...

Like clockwork, the slime’rat response - smear and attack the victim.

These people are despicable.

Want the truth? The Left can't handle the truth.

The government doesn't grant rights. Therefore the government didn't give the people raising a ruckus in the '60s any more rights than they had. What the government did do was grease the skids so the selfsame people who had previously been encouraged to excel no longer had to do so. Some favor. People who had previously been determined to better their lot through hard work now found it no longer necessary. The family breadwinner became optional, then a burden (reduced benefits). The family broke down for any in thrall to the Government, and once again, millions had a master, who could bestow benefits or take them away almost at a whim: the Government.

Freedom?

No, just a different style of chains.

God bless everyone who did not opt in, who remained independent, who worked hard to be their best, and who kept their families together.

You just can’t let this go by, or everybody is going to be like, ‘If Bundy can break the law, why can’t I?’ ”

And it could get even worse. Maybe something like "I won't pay my back taxes until I get appointed to a cabinet post."

Exactly.

Bundy and everyone that supported him are now racists.
Of course they knew that all along...

No, just a different style of chains.

And they are not the kind that some government will remove. Indeed, the government wants those chains!

the slime’rat response - smear and attack the victim.

When a man sticks a "kick me" sign on his own behind...

If he had a better grasp of the fact that black family life has disintegrated in direct correlation to the "War on Poverty", he has a defensible position. Throwing out that "picking cotton" allusion is just stupid.

Bundy is now being slammed by the left for being a racist.

Actually, if these statements are accurate he will be slammed by 90% of America for pretty blatant racist remarks. Paul, Heller, etc, pretty much everyone is going to walk about from someone who talks like this.

I mean, come on now. You can't stand around talking about how the negro should have learned to pick cotton. I mean, even the most hard headed amongst us should understand that you can't ally yourself politically with a person who makes such remarks.

Conservatives really, really, need to pick their battles better. How so many of us get suckered into supporting cranks, completely unelectable candidates, scam artists like Herman Cain who run for office to fund a book tour, etc, etc, I will never understand.

I wonder what those percentages are on this board. I can see this thread turning into a powder keg.

Is there any way we can get a consultant out to these folks before they start talking about ‘legitimate rape’ and ‘the Negro’?

Seriously, the first think the NYT is going to do is send a reporter out there and say ‘What do you think about how the government treats blacks?’ and then write down the perfect response.

I think Mr. Clive Bundy has officially jumped the shark.

I’m reminded of George Zimmerman. The issues surrounding the shooting of Trayvon Martin were all correct. But Zimmerman personally was a tool; he was no shining example of conservatism. And neither is Bundy.

So because he made less than articulate, but truthful statements we should abandon him to the US Gestapo?

Really?

I won’t brand him as a racist because he comments on his observations...”picking cotton” is a euphimism, a poor one, but one nonetheless regarding WORK.

This is a par for the course tactic by leftist scum...

If these quotes are accurate, this is a needless self inflicted wound. It plays directly into the hands of the Left and Harry Reid and will be used to attack conservatives and justify further Federal intrusions.

Realistically this signals that Bundy is finished. How sad. You can be right but politically wrong and that will finishh you.

He should have brought up that all Americans suffer when they ‘take’ from the government. Picking one group over the other will always create a division.
