Attorney General Eric Holder on Wednesday called Justice Sonia Sotomayors dissent in the Supreme Courts latest affirmative action ruling courageous.
At an event on diversity within the Justice Department, Holder said its tempting to think the struggle to overcome discrimination has ended when people like him or President Obama have reached the nations highest ranks. But he said the fight for equal rights is not over.
"[This] great country still has a ways to go before our founding promise of equal justice and equal opportunity is fully realized, he said.
Holder quoted Sotomayor in the dissent she filed a day earlier in 6-2 Supreme Court ruling that upheld Michigans ban on affirmative action in college admissions. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined in the dissent. Just yesterday in her courageous and personal dissent, Holder quoted Sotomayor as saying that people sholud not wish away, rather than confront, the racial inequality that exists in our society... The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to speak openly and candidly on the subject of race.
White House press secretary Jay Carney declined to weigh in on the ruling Tuesday, but noted President Obama has previously said using race as a factor could be appropriate under certain circumstances.
Holder said confronting existing disparities not only requires a dialogue, but principled action to address and remediate the lingering impacts of racial discrimination.
The high courts decision on Tuesday essentially says states have the right to ban affirmative action. A majority of Michigan voters approved the state's ban in 2006. It was the second affirmative action case the justices ruled on in the last year.
In a 2012 interview at the World Leaders Forum, Holder appeared to express support for the race-conscious policy.
Affirmative action has been an issue since segregation practices, Holder said. The question is not when does it end, but when does it begin. . . . When do people of color truly get the benefits to which they are entitled?
Holder is a COWARD.
“Lawless” equals “courageous” in the progressives’ lexicon.
And Holder certainly knows a thing or two about affirmative action.
I know this may be hyperbole to some, but watching and listening to these clowns, for me, is reminiscent of watching the top Nazi’s cavorting in the late 1930’s.
And like those Nazi’s, time will not be kind to them.
And it will take even longer with latter day fascists inferring thought, word and deed from one's particular skin color.
Well, as my father always says, they stick together. Naturally, they have benefitted from it like our occupant in the White Hut
Is the Democrat Partys lingering support of the unconstitutional Affirmative Action Law mainly due to their guilt that the Democrat Party founded the KKK?
Courageous or Predictable?
Justice Sonia Sotomayor has been open about how affirmative action played a role in her life and the reasoning behind her dissent only confirms it.
And typical of ignorant liberal people.
He would day that!
He would day that! Didn’t think I needed to proof read. Sorry.
He would say that.
Sotomeyer’s attitude is disgusting. She’s proud of taking seats in college and law school from more qualified students! That alone should’ve disqualified her from the Supreme Court.
It’s alarming that a U.S.Attorney general sees everything thru racist glasses.
I take your point and your humor but I think they are like a kid who keeps getting a free game from a malfunctioning pinball machine...they think they’ve gamed the system and don’t want the freebies to end (sounds familiar).
All the po-faced stuff gets old very quick but obviously the media will exhaust themselves attempting to present Holder, Obama, et al as serious thinkers on a subject. But when your work day begins at 10:30 or 11 AM and you can’t tear your eyes away from ESPN on the flat-panel TVs in the Oval Office, odds are you aren’t doing much thinking.
Holder has ratcheted up the poor-us rhetoric of late, probably because he’s losing cases and support on an almost daily basis.
Failure to prepare is preparing to fail. Instead of crying over spilled milk, what did Holder do about the case before it went before the court? Did he leave it up to the government solicitors? Was he confident of the Court overstepping its bounds again? Or is Holder like Obama in that jawboning an issue is all the effort he’s willing to expend?
When you think about the practical manifestation of these ideas/policies, it’s insane. Universities will preach about equality, diversity, and good old tolerance. They will fill brochures and web sites with this drivel. They will then turn around and build dorms, student centers, even entire academic *koff* departments based on the melanin content of one’s skin. It’s madness, especially if we remember the self-righteous ‘divest’ movement re: apartheid in South Africa. In reality, they were simply importing apartheid to their own campuses.
That sow has no business being a judge and shouldn’t even be allowed to have a law license!
