A Milford man appears to be the first person charged after failing to comply with Connecticuts law requiring the registration of certain firearms and standard capacity magazines:
A 65-year-old man faces an array of charges after he allegedly shot a squirrel in his yard Monday morning.
James Toigo, 258 Housatonic Dr., was charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, cruelty to an animal, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree breach of peace, failure to register an assault rifle and three counts of possessing large-capacity magazines, according to a police press release.
Police were directing traffic in the area of Housatonic Drive when they heard a gunshot nearby, according to the release.
Upon investigation, police said Toigo was taken into custody after finding he had shot the squirrel. Police said they also found an unregistered assault rifle, as well as three large-capacity magazines, in Toigos home. Both the firearms and the magazines were taken, the release said.

Incident raises lots of curious questions. Gun was sighted in well. One shot. One squirrel.
W...T...F... Has this world come to? How insane!
Had I read this 10 years ago, I would have thought it to be satire, or an article from The Onion.
My guess is a Ruger 10/22.
You know how those pistol grips make firearms more deadly, right?

I think it was in a housing development. Who knows where that round may go. It was stupid. However, a .22 assault rifle??
Maybe he had a couple of those.
Or does CT's stupid law consider a 10-round magazine to be "high-capacity?"
Can you imagine how the girly-men cops would have freaked out if he had one of those 30-rounders?
More like a S&W MP 15-22 I’d guess.
Mine too. Ruger finally started making 25 and even 50 (two 25 together) magazines. And they’re great. I’ve got some.
A .22 assault rifle? Incredible. I’m driving around Connecticut if I’m ever in Canada/
Not to mention that he will probably be facing a civil suit by the squirrels law firm: Dewey, Skroom & Howe.
The State of Conn would rather jail a 68 Man for shooting a tree rodent than going after some illegal alien who is here illegally, typical Progressive mindset.
An air rifle would have been more appropriate.

Which is why I ignore the Glen Becks on the right who demand we act like Ghandi.
I love my 10/22! The smaller kids used to shoot it more than I did(until .22 ammo went extinct). I still have thousands of rounds of .22, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to easily replace it, so it just sits in the safe. Now, I’ve promoted them all up to the AR15s, since 5.56 is more plentiful and they seem to enjoy it more anyway.
Since when is shooting a tree rat considered animal cruelty?
I’ve heard that Marlin 60’s can hold 17 rounds.
