“Have you ever thought you’d see the mayor and council working together?,” says the voice on a Detroit radio ad.

No, we didn’t. But this ad, set to hit Detroit radio airwaves April 21st features both Mayor Mike Duggan and City Council President Brenda Jones.

The ad showcases the website buildingdetroit.org which features 12 city-owned properties in East English Village, each home waiting for an owner as long as they are willing to rehab the property and move in.

Mike Duggan: NOT REALLY. THIS IS MIKE DUGGAN AND IT IS A NEW DAY IN DETROIT. INSTEAD OF JUST KNOCKING DOWN OUR VACANT HOMES, WE’RE SAVING THE BEST. DETROIT LAND BANK IS SELLING THEM TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN DETROIT’S FUTURE AND OUR WEBSITE BUILDINGDETROIT.ORG

If I had money, I might, perhaps might, invest in property in Detroit, based on the idea that it has hit rock bottom, and there’s nowhere to go but up. But no way do I want to go live there.

Refurbish the place and turn it into a shooting club.

Shooting range....hmmmmm....good idea.

I wonder how many cleared lots it would take to make 100 yards? Better leave the last house standing for a backstop though.

Detroit is rather amazing. There are really nice neighborhoods and really pathetic neighborhoods sometimes right across the street from each other.

Kids, you too can own a square inch in beautiful
Detroit Michigan. If fact with the help of
President Obama’s new own it yourself plan,
we’ll pay you to buy it.
Ask about our EZ buy plan when you register for
your Obamacare physical.

Try to make Detroit more gay-friendly. Homos have rehabed blighted neighborhoods in other large cities such as Dallas.

“Refurbish the place and turn it into a shooting club.”

You mean like the Somali Coast Cruise Ships? Put in armor plate and gun ports and rent out space to shoot at property violators?

Hmmm...urban homesteading of a sort. People tend to take better care of what’s theirs.

Too cold for me, but having hit bottom I’m hoping Detroit can come back. If I were (much) younger I might think about going there. Sure hope gov does not screw up what appears to be a Detroit comeback. If the city is smart they will keep taxes and cost of living low to attract workers and employers!

Michigan appears to be continuing the republican trend and that helps a lot. They’re even making inroads into Detroit.

If I was a young man I would seriously consider Detroit. Detroit is at rock bottom. You can buy homes in Detroit for one dollar! One thousand dollars gets you a nice fixer upper. If there is work to be had there one will make big bucks in the next 20 years in Detroit. If you stay alive that is.

Which is the reason they have no buyers to start with. No one wants to live there.

Sorry but you're wrong....East English Village was a sterling neighborhood until the original owners sold and moved out to the suburbs when property values in the village were high. The subsequent buyers ultimately got cought up in the housing bubble crash and eventually defaulted on their mortgages and taxes.

Duggan has the right idea, these houses will sell for dirt cheap and with work, will be restored to their original glory..........Anybody with foresight and cash should jump on these offers.........

As a side note, east side properties surrounding the downtown area are being snatched up by investors like fat people with discounts on twinkies........

These are people who aren't used to throwing their money away. Detroit is going to make a comeback regardless of what you and the rest of you out of staters who know absolutely nothing about Detroit have to say.........

The question to ask is how much in back property taxes are owed? How much in water, sewer, and other utilities? Interest owed?

Exactly. Who wants to live in a high crime area? The city should have used the money they spent on this spot to rehab the crime problem.

They look nice, but seem to be bungalows without a securible perimeter.

It can always double as a travel agency for hunting trips off the coast of Somalia.

20 years ago I did “weatherization “ on ghetto houses in Detroit. Back the , neglect had rendered most of them beyond rehab. Two decades of further neglect will make the. Completely uninhabitable.

Nice try Mike. Here’s a better idea. Close down a few square miles and lease the area to army, SEAL’s, Guard, SWAT and other agencies. Might give BLM an excuse to use all their tactical toys.

Use the homes for training then burn it all so fire departments can get some serious training. Then clear the land, down to the sewers.

Rip it all out, sell the salvageable materials, and plant corn.
