HOLY WEEK AND EASTER

This time there is a time signature, 3/4, but again no key signature because it would just get in the way. It’s marked “reverie, quite slow”, but there are episodes marked “robust, moderate and rather fast”.

In the slow sections, he makes time expand and contract, almost stopping at times. In the fast sections, the cello imitates an air raid siren with a wild glissando. At 6:12, he marks it “ecstatic”, and the piano plays arpeggios while the other instruments play a series of trills. It ends wildly, as a jumble should.

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER

This is the movement everyone waits for, because this finale is where the handkerchiefs come out. For once we have a time signature, 4/4, combined with a key signature, four sharps, which in this case is E Major. It’s for violin and piano alone, and it’s marked “extremely slow and tender, ecstatic”.

The piano plays groups of thirty-second notes into double-dotted eighth notes for the whole of the movement. It’s Messiaen’s way of portraying heartbeats musically. The violin soars over it, and at the end, the soul ascends into heaven. It disappears into silence.

Superfries is just a made up funny name....think I heard it in a comedy bit in the late 80’s.

We’re both fine as far as the fire goes. It was in a bowl above 8000’. The fire crews did a great job of keeping it confined. By yesterday, it was down to a few hot spots and by this evening it should all be over but for the mopping up. It rained today!
