A new online poll found that Americans just are not interested in the the World Cup, which is the world's top sporting event.
According to the poll, "two in three Americans do not plan to follow this year's tournament," only "7 percent said they anticipated following it closely," 86 percent of Americans "said they either know nothing or only a little bit about the World Cup, and more than two-thirds did not know Brazil is the 2014 host nation."

While I never had any interest in “football”, as known around the world, an older friend asked if I would fly him to Mexico for the 1970 World Cup. I decided it might be interesting and fun, and we could do a little side traveling.
I admit, it was interesting, being in what I think was the world’s largest stadium at the time, for the final two games, and seeing the famous Pele play and win it for Brazil. The side trips by rented car added to the fun.
Brazil is no doubt the favorite, but Argentina, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium should be in the conversation. Portugal could be a dark horse with Ronaldo.
Definitely, the World's greatest sporting event. We have lots of soccer pubs in the DC area to watch the games with the plenty of knowledgeable fans. Great fun.

Well, I was good enough to be recruited for a club team before I left for Europe (i.e. they sought me out when I had no interest in playing). I had discovered girls. Much more interesting. I also enjoyed basketball more because it was so fast paced and intense while soccer was slow, dull, and there were far too many claims of “oh, I’m hurt”. That Big House....and thirty stadiums just like it get filled up quite regularly on Saturdays....and another fifteen stadiums repeat on Sunday.
Its not even debatwe - soccer is not a preferred spectator sport in this country.
Many NFL games are not sellouts. The changing demographics of this country will result in soccer (football) becoming more popular. We have 45 million foreign born in this country and the numbers grow every year.
Oh, I also had a brief karate and Tae Kwon Do (and (Jung Sim Do) interlude in my youth. Sometimes I miss that most.

Utter nonsense! I'm no fan of soccer either (hate it, actually). But soccer linked to the "decline of culture in America"?
Soccer is just hockey -- hockey without the ice, the skates, the sticks, the pucks, the speed, the blood, and the errant tooth.
My nephew is a fantastically talented soccer player. He also happens to be a staunch conservative. He's no pussy. (And he has all his teeth!)
If you really see soccer as a link to the decline of American culture, then you have missed some *REALLY* big elephants in the room.
The FIFA World Cup is the quadrennial soccer championship held every four years since 1930 (with two exceptions as a result of that whole WWII thing). The Cup’s final game is the single most viewed sporting event on earth. The 2010 match between Spain and The Netherlands was watched by an estimated 700 million people. That’s a decent chunk of the world’s entire population.
