The Social Security Administration announced Monday it is suspending a controversial program that goes after adult children of deceased taxpayers who the government claims were recipients of overpayments more than a decade ago.
Acting Social Security Commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin said she has directed an immediate halt to the three-year-old program while the agency does a review. The controversial program seized tax refunds in an effort to recoup the funds.
The move to stop the program came after many of the recipients and members of Congress complained to the federal agency.

More government by bureaucratic whim.
Glad to see this stop.
I’m ignorant of the laws in this area. But, just wondering, if a deceased person owes money, doesn’t a claim have to be filed against the estate of that person?
It seems odd to me that someone decided that the adult children were somehow legally responsible to pay back these overpayments.
Some of the IRS cronies must’ve realized that their own parents didn’t pay their nursing home bill in full and hoped they could suspend the program before any journalists looked into it. The enforcers always have violators of “the law” in ther ranks...
There is no statute of limitations when it comes to the feral government and money.
I guess they figured out that the people they were confiscating refunds from were EITC recipients whose parents had played loosely with SSI claims and the like.
Can’t have the gubmint taking all that free EITC money away from the voters they are trying to buy with it.
My mother died on a Friday, the 27th of February a few years ago.....by Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week, we received a letter that Social Security had already gone to the bank and sucked back her entire February benefit......not pro-rated; all of it.
Based on the one article I saw about some old lady who was a low salary teacher or something like that getting ripped off from her refund because of her momma’s SSI stuff back when.
I got to thinking about that and I started to think about exactly how do you get a near $4000 refund when you’ve always been low paid? They certainly weren’t over withholding. What I concluded is that there is another reason. EITC.
Hey, Morons in Congress:
This Government has gotten SO big and the bureaucracy is running SO MUCH on autopilot, they are even capable of doing stupid things like this in an ELECTION YEAR that can COST YOU your JOB!!!
Are ANY of you scared yet?
Those who run our government have the wisdom to pick us off one at a time.
You’re right, it will probably resume in the future.
But I still question how they could legally do this. Adult children are not responsible for the debts of their adult parents. Or vice versa. Yet in this area, some bureaucrat decided they should do things this way.
Legality no longer matters it is the collection of funds from the American people for the purpose of distributing it to ones political friends.
They do this crap because they’re never punished. We need to start throwing these government officials in jail. Maybe then they’ll stop obeying unlawful orders from the top?
"Acting Social Security Commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin said she has directed an immediate halt to the three-year-old program while the agency does a review. "
Halted until after the mid-terms?
They will keep pushing, and slowly become more and more fascist, unless we wake up and do something.
I heard that initially, they looked back 40 years, and then only to the eldest child. Then they reduced it to a lookback of 10 years from some “source” of pressure. Law? “We don’t need no steenkin law!”
Congress passed the bill, only to find out what’s in it........AGAIN!
Need to find out who repealed it in the farm bill.
