Usually, the Internal Revenue Service is the one getting paid this time of year, but Uncle Sam will be lining someone else's pockets this tax season because of its attachment to Windows XP. In case you hadn't heard, support for XP officially stopped on April 8th, meaning that Microsoft will no longer provide support or security updates for the venerable OS.
However, governmental computers can't be left vulnerable, so the IRS will be paying Microsoft millions of dollars for custom support to keep their machines secure and functional. Right now, over half the agency's PCs still run XP...

But will they take YOUR or MY MONEY to continue support of our XP machines running critical business functions that can't be upgraded to Win7? OH, NO!! That would be bad, right, Microsoft??
FUIRS
FUMS
Tech Ping request....
But wait....That’s my money.
Its a damned good operating system.
Microsoft is happy to take the money. After all the Feds know a good value when they see one.
That's right! YOU ARE PAYING MICROSOFT FOR THE SECURITY UPDATES. AND YOU AREN'T ALLOWED TO GET THEM.
Because you're paying through the IRS, the middleman.
GRRRR.
really agree, upgrade.
You think you're kidding, don't you??
It would cost far less to do an enterprise installation of win se7en.
Or force them to use Surface Tablets as punishment for not preparing.
But I've got small business clients whose custom written business software applications, and in some cases mission critical tools no longer supported by the manufacturer, run on XP. They CANNOT be upgraded to Win7, and replacement or rewrite is prohibitively expensive. It would put them out of business.
Microsoft could make continuing support available at a reasonable cost -- they are already going to be developing and distributing the security updates. But they won't. That's inexcusably lame.
Oh boy.
Microsoft used to be in the target of Democrat politicians now after taking its campaign money these Democrats give Microsoft much taxpayer money.
Bill Gates leaned how to make the system work for him.
I’m guessing the Koch’s are being attacked like Microsoft was is because they aren’t giving Democrats more campaign money.
Seems it would be cheaper to upgrade to Win7...in the long run.
Third party support patches will be available for Windows XP now that Microsoft has ceased supporting it.
People will find a way to keep it running.
“Bill Gates leaned how to make the system work for him.”
Bill and Co. got reamed by the Clinton administration, IIRC, along the lines of monopoly and unfair practices. He wants the money back. He’s chucklin’ like Mutley.
Just out of curiosity I invoked Microsoft Update on my XP box, which had already gotten its “final updates” a few days ago. It still had Bing Bar available and permitted me to apply it.
It’s probably cheaper to do this than it is to take the IRS boxen forward to another version of Windows.
They could consider using Linux, I guess.
In most cases, that's correct.
But in many cases, it's an unaffordable option.
Consider the upside. No one is going to develop malware for a “dead” operating system.
XP is going to be more secure now that Microsoft has proclaimed its official obituary.
It wasn’t procrastination...it was a well-planned pay-off. The latest installment in the lucrative “create-a-crisis” Government game.
Ha! ha! ha!
