Black female lawmakers have now weighed in on an Army controversy over what one soldier calls racially biased hairstyle regulations.
Sixteen female members of the Congressional Black Caucus signed a letter Thursday to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, stating that the changes are discriminatory rules targeting soldiers who are women of color.
The rule in question, Army Regulation 670-1, bans hairstyles that require twists and dreadlocks, among other options preferred by minority soldiers.
The Army contends that the grooming requirement is needed to maintain uniformity.

the hair thing is stupid anyway
You joined the military, not a glee club.
Get over it.
Obama’s military.
Women p*ssing and moaning about their hairstyles... pretty soon the fags will be p*ssing and moaning about the uniforms (insufficient fashion sense) and demanding high-heeled combat boots.
The country’s gone to sh*t.
This is really all about financial management:
When they have too many guys, things tighten up on some typical criteria;
1. Tattoos
2. Criminal history
3. Body fat
4. Physical fitness scores
If finances are such that they can’t keep anyone, they really don’t want to call up and say that, exactly.
So they tighten up on one or more of those, and this has the effect of kicking some folks out.
There has been 100 years of this.
Exactly!
I was once a navy wife.
His haircut looked like hell.
His thick black frame issued eyeglasses were nerd-worthy.
And it was too damn bad.
“His haircut looked like hell.”
It can be tough on the ship’s barber when you’re taking 30 degree rolls.
“His thick black frame issued eyeglasses were nerd-worthy.”
Yeah, but the Navy doesn’t require that you wear issue frames.
Still, I’d give a lot to go back to those days. Or to be healthy enough to do it again.
“So they tighten up on one or more of those”
You should have seen how loose it got after Nixon abolished the draft. There were guys coming in whose total test score was lower than either individual score was supposed to be.
Hagel will stand up to this..with all the force of a butterfly sneeze.
I was in The Air Force and remember those glasses. We called them birth control glasses because you were never getting “any” if wore them. LOL.
Yup.
He wore his own glasses off-duty or he wouldn’t have, even from me.
;D
Maybe everyone can design their own uniform.
Hahahaha!!!
Crew cuts all the way around. Solves the problem, and I suspect it would solve a few other problems......
Well how about facial tattoos, nose bones, stick pins through the nose, eyelids, tongue, etc., head scarfs or Muslim head bags, sandals or flip flops and other common preferences that many segments of society embrace?
I think it originally was to ease head wound treatment and prevent infections. Can you just see someone shot up and the corpman/medic is trying to find the wound amidst a tangle of bloody Dreads?
I have to ask. Did you require he wear his glasses during....?
I was in the Navy under Zumwalt. We got to grow our hair long compared to before he took over as CNO. And beards were allowed.
I think it also had something to do with head lice.
