(Reuters) - A family of four rescued from their sailboat after their infant daughter became seriously ill at sea returned safely to San Diego on Wednesday aboard a U.S. warship that picked them up in the Pacific over the weekend, a Navy spokeswoman said.
The parents, Eric and Charlotte Kaufman, and their two daughters, 3-year-old Cora and 1-year-old Lyra, left the Navy frigate Vandegrift after the ship arrived in port around 10 a.m. local time and proceeded to their family doctor, according to Lieutenant Lenaya Rotklein of the Third Fleet.
Rotklein declined to give any further information about the arrival of the Kaufmans at Naval Air Station North Island on San Diego Bay except to say all four family members were "stable when they departed" and were met at the port by relatives.
The family was two weeks into a planned around-the-world cruise on their 36-foot (11-metre) sloop when Lyra developed a fever and rash, prompting her parents to send a distress call to the Coast Guard by satellite phone last Thursday.
In addition to the child falling ill, the family reported that their boat was taking on water whenever they tried to start the vessel's engine, the Coast Guard said.
A four-man team from the California Air National Guard's 129th Rescue Wing was dispatched by military plane to the scene, about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) out in the Pacific off Mexico, to render medical assistance.

Oh yeah, it’s good to have volunteers to go up in the bosun’s chair to fix stuff.
It appears that the baby had not finished her entire prescription meds for the Salmonella Poisoning she had a few weeks ago before embarking on the trip. In other words, the meds were for 2 weeks, or something like that, and she got better after a week and they left shortly after that.
Also, I want to know if the doctor who cleared her was their family doctor or a Mexican ‘doctor’... they spent a few days in Cabo.
They were traveling to New Zealand.
NEW ZEALAND! Where it’s Fall-turning-to-Winter!!
Like my Puerto Rican grandma used to say: “Idiotas! Cretinos!”
XCUUUUSE Me. It was a SAILBOAT. Doesn't really need an engine. See also: Columbus, Henry Hudson, Capt. Kidd, Magellan etc. etc. San Diego harbor hobby skippers should not venture into deep water.
I have a friend with 13 children. One day, apropos of the relevant activity, she asked me, “Do your children pull the stuffing out of the sofa in front of guests?” and I replied, “No, not yet, but they jump off the roof in front of police officers.”
She said, “Oh, mine have never done THAT!”
“That’s because you don’t have police officers living on your street!”
Remember Please Don't Eat the Daisies? It wasn't until I became a parent that I realized it was a documentary.
Even the Vikings crewed a 40-50 ft. vessel for an ocean voyage, and they knew what they were doing, and where they were going...
And I seriously doubt that any Viking ever undertook such a sail as lightly as these idiots seem to have done.
Vikings did not sail with babies.
When we took family trips, pillows and comforters in the car all around and the air conditioning was cranked up to iceberg. We would listen to story tapes, short ones and long ones for hours at a time.
What’s been overlooked is that apparently they also dragged a helpless cat into this mess. WHO brings a cat on a boat trip around the world?
I know of a family that did this. What’s worse is they’re happy to tell you they and their children lived naked on the boat.....and they’re complete idiots and slobs.
Gee. Funny, I’m not thinking that. I’m thinking about what might have gone wrong in your childhood to make you think that way. (Also, I wonder about your reliance on The State to “punish” people who make it stupid mistakes.) These folks weren’t ready for a weekend sail, much less a circumnavigation. The Navy saved their asses. The Coast Guard does this sort of thing all the time... And I know a few Bosun’s Mates who are completely hopeless as sailors. Give the guy a break. He screwed up, and he almost killed his own kids. That’s punishment enough. Plus he’s probably a Liberal Democrat, which means God will punish him no matter what.
“who brings thier kids on a sail boat going round the world on an ocean?”
Thousands of families - from many different countries. In some countries in Europe, it is a long-standing tradition to take your family for a Sabbatical year and sail.
As just one example, here is a website of sailing families...

“WHO brings a cat on a boat trip around the world?”
MANY sailors have a cat or dog.
Here for examples: http://www.sailblogs.com/member_list.php
My family used to drive from southern California to the Midwest. We would start off after bedtime and drive all night across the desert, and then stop around lunchtime at, iirc, Gallup, New Mexico.
My brother and I were supposed to sleep in the back of the station wagon.
I am happy they were saved. But now charge them at least $100,000 for the effort.
OMG I cannot even imagine. Lovely thing for the children to grow up seeing.
In the wooden-ship days, cats were an important part of keeping the rats down. Under the circumstances of this family, a cat is pooping in the very small space shared by their babies. Unnngh.
“Home for a Bunny” was my children’s favorite book. They loved it so much that I bought two additional copies to save for the eventual arrival of grandchildren.
