More than 1,000 people protested in a main square in Donetsk, an industrial city, before breaking into the regional administrative building where they hung a Russian flag from a second floor balcony, a Reuters witness said.
The protesters outside cheered and chanted "Russia!".
"Around 1,000 people took part (in the storming of the building), mostly young people with their faces covered," said Ihor Dyomin, a spokesman for Donetsk local police.
"Around 100 people are now inside the building and are barricading the building."

The news announcer said the Luhansk protesters wanted a referendum on the status of their region, similar to the vote carried out in Crimea which paved the way for the region's annexation by Russia. They also demanded the release of people detained by security services in recent days.

There are no guarantees in life, but there was no upside for most of the people to have Ukraine continue to be a satellite of Russia. Just as with other former Soviet bloc nations, they want to set their own path, not what Russia has set for them.
Maybe Ukrainians are seeing what’s happening in Greece and realize they want no part of that?
Do Ukrainians really think the Germans and other EU bigshots are going to treat them as equals?

There is no long term upside in Ukraine continuing to be a satellite state of Russia.
I just don’t see complete independence from the EU nor Russia as a possibility for Ukraine.
Perhaps a split of the country is the only viable solution in the end.

Yes the Ukraine government may not be great. I don’t have a problem with that description. Does that mean the nation deserves to be invaded and land taken from it? No. I don’t believe it does.
The Ukraine has established borders. Yes some of the citizens speak Russian. I don’t think they should be persecuted or treated as second class citizens, but I do believe the Ukraine government has the right to expect national jobs, to be occupied by people who speak Ukrainian.
We have the same issue here, and I believe every citizen should be functional in English. If they hold a government job, they should be required to IMO.
I’ve used this example before, but we have a lot of territory when Spanish is predominantly spoken. Should Mexico be able to come to the border, cross over and hold special elections based on the language spoken? No, IMO.
When it comes right down to it, I’m not convinced Russia’s political system is much better than the Ukraine’s. Putin changes the game to stay in power. Where’s the invading forces to set that right? Well of course there shouldn’t be any. It’s Russian’s internal affair.
Ukraine has the same right to have internal affairs.

I suggest the ethnic Russian protesters in Eastern Ukraine pull the same stunt the mob pulled in Kiev. I encourage them to start throwing Molotov cocktails at the police and burning them alive until they have no choice but to respond with lethal force. THEN once the police have defended themselves with deadly force, then have them protesters run to the press with video showing how violent the regime in Kiev is and how they are committing atrocities against innocent protesters only seeking to burn police alive! The thugs that took over Kiev best be glad I hadn't been in charge, because I would have called in the military and cleared that square faster than the Chinese did Tienanmen square.

The script was taken right out of the Anarchists’ playbook. Have a “peaceful” protest, which might attract a large number of participants. Ratchet up the vandalism and violence (it only takes a small fraction of the total crowd to do this), until you provoke a police response. The police response garners you sympathy, and you have larger crowds at your next demonstration. Keep ratcheting up the vandalism and violence until tanks roll on the street. At that point, the U.S., NATO, etc. steps in, and you can overthrow the existing government.
In recent years, that formula worked in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Yemen, and Ukraine. It almost worked in Syria, Algeria and other places. Apparently, it didn’t fool Putin; but, he’s not above imitating the strategy.
