Despite what constituents outside of Washington might think, members of Congress are underpaid, a House Legislative Branch appropriator suggested Thursday.
Virginia Democrat James P. Moran said he plans to highlight the injustice by introducing an amendment to the Legislative Branch bill during its full committee markup, and at floor consideration of the bill. Moran made the comments while the bill that funds member’s $174,000 salaries was being marked up in the Legislative Branch subcommittee.
“I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid,” Moran told CQ Roll Call. “I understand that it’s widely felt that they underperform, but the fact is that this is the board of directors for the largest economic entity in the world.”

I suggest building a dormitory for the bastards; and regarding the people who live in DC and worry about not having representative gov’t — no one has a gun to your head to live in DC. The town should have NO permanent residents, just hotels and B&Bs for tourists (and demostrators), dormitories for the elected, and embassies.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Moran’s district is suburban D.C. That means he doesn’t need a second home in the district; all he does is commute like any other civil servant. So why is he complaining about his salary?
If the salary is not enough, then the should relinquish it in exchange for section 8 housing, food stamps, an Obama phone, and all of the other goodies the entitlement crowd takes. Let them live the life of ‘equality’ that they so espouse, including enrollment in Obamacare.
They used to use these at Parris Island, but I remember seeing these all the time when I was at Kadena in 69.
I worked comms at the air terminal and we’d get contracted commercial airflights of Army and Marine Corps troops in and they’d be transferred to these to go to jungle training on the island - then to Viet Nam.
Also would see the troops filtering back from Viet Nam brought in on C-130s, etc. and then put in them again to be taken to get cleaned up and sent back home. I’m a Georgia boy, and I never thought I’d see that red Georgia clay outside the state, but I saw plenty of it from those troops coming back from there.
It was caked on many them; dirty sweaty, tired, their boots worn and flattened - yet there was a broad smile on all their faces just glad to get back to the world (or on the way to it).
Of course that recent reversal of the ban on 'insider trading' probably did not hurt this trend. Add to it the perks, connections and retirements along with the prestige and isn't it interesting how so many spend so much to be so poor?
They really do believe they're the bosses of the rest of us, not our servants. Sometimes they just can't help but show their true feelings.

Exactly! And they better hope we, the people, don’t progress their living quarters to prison or worse.
More the reason to cause the Congress Critters to tele-commute from their home office. While not an original idea, it seems its time has come. Ith modern internet programs that allow online meetings and full interactions, these representatives of the people could perform from locations where the people, their bosses, could watch thems and supervise them and do it for 1/10th the cost.
Why do you want to feed them? Let them farm and feed themselves. It would be a real education for them.
You beat me to it. A fantastic idea. Also, John Q. Citizen could log on and monitor much of the proceedings. Might not be much to observe at first but it sure would inform John Q. as to what the members of House and Senate are doing or not doing.
