The International Court of Justice has ordered a temporary halt to Japan's annual slaughter of whales in the southern ocean after concluding that the hunts are not, as Japan claims, conducted for scientific research.

Good enough. They went to court, they lost, the Japanese say they will abide by the ruling.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the government is secretly pleased because it has become very burdensome, over the years, using hard won international capital to defend an industry that should have died out peacefully in the 70s.
There will be grumbles among the oyajis and obasans, but there is enough stockpiled whale meat in government freezers to keep them happily gumming for decades, so there is really no reason to kill more whales.
Most Japanese will shrug and go on about their business. Supporting whalers is not on the top of their lists.
How exactly does one become a member of the “international community”? I’ve been to no fewer than 6 different nations on 3 continents, so do I qualify? If so, I’d vote to allow the Japanese whalers to sink any Sea Shepherd vessels they come across.
The International Court of Justice owns the world’s oceans?
I hadn’t been aware of that.
Ya learn something new every day.
Japan and Norway do not hunt endangered species of whales.
They should keep at it.
how can anyone order another country to cease and desist in international waters????
What were they doing whaling by the international court in Antarctica in the first place? < / just kidding >
Wait until Obama tells them, or better yet John Kerry of Joe Biden. That will bring the pressure.
If they actually land one, I'd let them keep it, but one guy has to gaff it and drag it on board.
Because Japan signed and ratified a number of treaties, including both the whaling treaty and the treaty giving jurisdiction to the International Court of Justice.
What it probably means is that Japan finally makes good on its threat to leave the International Whaling Commission, which is not treaty enforced and allowed itself to be taken over by anti-whaling nations.
