Former Alabama Sen. Jeremiah A. Denton Jr., a prisoner of war for more than seven years in North Vietnam, died on Friday in Virginia Beach. Mr. Denton was 89 years old.
His son, Jim Denton, told The Washington Post, which first reported the news, that his father died of a heart ailment.
Mr. Denton, a retired U.S. Rear Admiral, was shot down over the city of Thanh Hoa in Vietnam in 1965 and captured while leading a bombing mission.
He later wrote a book about his experiences.
Mr. Denton grabbed national attention in 1966 when he was forced to give an interview as a prisoner, and he blinked in Morse code with his eyes to spell out the word torture.
He later received the Navy Cross and other decorations...

I agree, even though it would be fitting of the Office of the President to at least acknowledge the passing of a truly heroic man.
I just hate the thought of that piker from 1600 PA Ave going I..I..Me...Me..I...I...when he and his mentors would have been partying with Hanoi Jane.
Thank you for your post. People the caliber of him and his family are remembered by many like yourself.
May you Rest in Peace, Sir. Have fun at your homecoming, Sir! Lord, please comfort the Family and Friends of this Man.
May he RIP. Prayers for his family.
Senator Denton truly was a great American. And politically, he established two “firsts” for a U.S. Senator from Alabama: first Republican since Reconstruction, and first (and, so far, only) Catholic.
RIP to a great Senator and man. It’s a great shame that Shelby beat him in ‘86.
Denton was the anti-McCain, a POW who didn’t lose his mind.
Amen to that.
Ping
Amen.
If I had known when I was shot down that I would be there more than seven years, I would have died of despondency, of despair, Admiral Denton told Investors Business Daily. But I didnt. It was one minute at a time, one hour, one week, one year and so on. If you look at it like that, anybody can do anything.
RIP, American patriot and hero.
So sorry to hear this. Yet in spite of the horrors he endured as a POW, he still lived a long and rewarding life. RIP, Sir.
Sad to hear this. He was a very good man, and a great American.
Did you know John Kerry was in Vietnam????And he got a band-aid for his wounds...
and Kerry besmirched great heroes like this..can you say Gengis Khan.
I just hate Kerry...
B careful over there. Denton was a patriot...
That is worth remembering. Truly he was a hero.
lol!!!
I STAND CORRECTED.
I’m doing fine. I don’t live in the jungle. Just next to it.
A real American patriot who was an honor to his
country and an outstanding example of leadership.
Rest in peace sir.
Then Captain Denton as SRO was the first prisoner off the plane at Clark in the Philippines. He became further immortalized when he spoke;
“We are honored to have the opportunity to serve our country under difficult circumstances. We are profoundly grateful to our Commander in Chief and to our nation for this day. God bless America.”
