Houston braces for invasion of 'Crazy Ants'
Fox News ^ | March 26, 2014 | Robert Gearty

This is one horror film plot that may be all too real: Billions of voracious ants are about to descend on the Houston area, destroying entire homes and anything else that gets in their way.

Rasberry Crazy Ants, even more destructive and mobile than their angry cousins, fire ants, are just weeks away from descending on the largest city in Texas. Since 2008, the ants, which entomologists believe came to Texas from South America aboard a cargo ship in the 1930s, have expanded their presence to 27 counties from just eight. Once in a home, they zero in on electrical systems, chewing through insulation and causing short circuits and general havoc.

“I’ve been in houses where every time you took a step you’d literally be stepping on thousands of ants with each step,” exterminator Tom Rasberry told FoxNews.com.

The hairy, reddish-brown ant is named after Rasberry because he was the first one to spot the insect in a Houston suburb in 2002. The ant, also known as the Tawny Crazy Ant, is even known to fight the fierce-stinging fire ant, another Texas scourge. Dormant until late April, Rasberry Crazy Ants thrive as temperatures heat up, prompting fears of a new advance in the coming weeks.

Malathion will do the trick. I rented a house next door to a dog hoarder. Fleas everywhere. I sprayed malathion between the houses and problem solved.

I found Bengal fire ant killer works really good on fire ants.

I disturb the nest then sprinkle it on the ants crawling around.

They take it back into the nest and most of the time the nest is dead the next day.

If you’re building a house spray 20 Mule Team Borax on all the wall studs up to about 2 feet. You’ll never see a termite.

They also sell AMDRO PowerFlex (Hydramethylnon). It is the active ingredient which matters - some do not work in wet environments, others need to be wetted to be effective. AMDRO may not work very well were you live, but be very effective in other locations.

Termidor SC (Fipronil 9.1%) works on carpenter and crazy ants according to domyownpestcontrol.com - outdoors only.

Some states do not allow unlicensed applicators for some products and so those products are not for sale to the general public.

Is it fairly new? When we lived in SC, folks were trying anything to kill them...grits seemed to work consistently...blew ‘em up.

Don’t have a problem here in the desert with fire ants, but the carpenter or argentine are a nuisance...get into food if it’s not secure.

dog hoarder

yuck. The only reason some people are alive is because it's against the law to kill them.

“a wok dish w/o Curry & Ginger?”

Good black Bean Garlic Sauce contains Ginger and Cumin. No Curry Powder though. Gonna stir fry some asparagus with the sauce for lunch today. Good for the kidneys!

I get it from Wal Mart.

I’ve been using it for several years now so it’s not new.

Have you tried 7 Dust?

If you can find where the carpenter ants nest is a few shots of carburetor cleaner does wonders and it’s a lot cheaper than termite killer.

RE Clint Eastwood:

He was the pilot in “THEM!”?? I had no clue.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Them!#Cast

I searched the cast in Wiki, but he didn’t turn up...

Fess Parker, though, who went on to play Davey Crockett, was in that movie, though.

Still to this day when it comes, I love to watch it. My son and daughter loved it when they were little too.

RE Spider:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarantula_%28film%29#Cast
That was “Tarantula” and Clint was the squadron leader in it.

LOVED those giant bug movies!!!

The Beginning of the End was another good one... giant locusts, and LOTS of them...
