Russian officials dump iPads over spy fears

Moscow — Russian government officials have swapped their iPads for Samsung tablets to ensure tighter security, the telecoms minister told news agencies on Wednesday. Journalists spotted that ministers at a cabinet meeting were no longer using Apple tablets, and minister Nikolai Nikiforov confirmed the changeover "took place not so long ago."

He said the ministers' new Samsungs were "specially protected devices that can be used to work with confidential information."

"Some of the information at government meetings is confidential in nature and these devices fully meet these demands and have gone through the strictest system of certification."

Nikiforov denied that Russia was clamping down on US technology in response to Western sanctions imposed over its takeover of Ukraine's Crimea peninsula.

"We are not proposing any sanctions," he said. But he did mention reading reports that "American special services... will significantly increase the volume of information they intercept (which) of course causes serious concern to many governmental clients."

"Russia's then-president and now Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev visited Silicon Valley in 2010 and received an iPhone as a gift from the late Steve Jobs, using it to send his first tweet."

Looks like Jobs slipped in a Trojan Horse.

So , since the Snowden release regarding electronics , much of the Russian secret documentation went into typewriters,
and the they would now have to watch for the burning of typewriter ribbons to maintain their secrets .
Pretty soon they will progress to the 'Pony Express' system; another Progressive move "Foreward" !.. by moving backwards !

That won’t stop anything, especially when the US can have South Korea over a barrel.

Or about any other company.

Moscow is overflowing with Wi-Fi hotspots and cell service.

They never had the wired experience. Went directly to wireless.

FSB is all for it. Big telecom operations like Beeline are wired directly into Russian intel.

Just like here!

I have had an iPad for years and it is a lot more secure than my desktop. I had trouble with hackers, viruses, etc on the desktop but nothing like that on my iPad but I do not know what kind of protection our computer expert put in place on it. I love my iPad but my daughter thinks I need to upgrade to a newer model. I do not want to change except for one thing. I can go to different sites and it will turn off on its own. Aggravating when I am in the middle of an email or whatever. I love the kindle feature and have over 250 books on it. One of my favorite authors is William W.Johnstone who wrote westerns and The Out of the Ashes series. If you like to read, check him out. Mamab

LOL ... if they were really concerned about security, they would definitely have an iPad and not a Samsung and it’s Google system.

It’s definitely more political than anything else — a successful “American company”? No way ... as far as the Russian official position!

True. Our company does business with the Russians. My late husband worked with the cosmonauts years ago. Check out: www.aztechnology.com. My late husband had a dream years ago and started the company in our basement. Now, our daughter, her husband, son and daughter, friends are keeping it alive. My talents are not in that direction, sad to say.

You got that right. It is a whole lot more secure because of the sandboxing of the apps. Furthermore, you cannot remotely install any apps, and you can only get your apps from one download place, which screen them for any illegal spying that anyone attempts to hide in them.
