Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder released a statement late Monday night announcing that despite widespread calls for the team to change its name, the name and logo would remain the same.
But in lieu of a name change, Snyder has created the Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation, with hopes to provide meaningful and measurable resources that provide genuine opportunities for tribal communities.

A tribe I can see. Redskins is a little provocative because it mentions a single color to describe a race. How about the Washington Coloreds?
It’s more ambiguous yet inclusive.
The University of North Dakota was forced to change their mascot, despite the blessing of the Sioux, who protested and appealed.
Them indians just don’t know what’s good for ‘em. They’re supposed to be offended. They actually are and are just too stupid to know it, apparently.
No, if he’d been spineless, the NFL team based in our nation’s capital would have a new name. This decision actually makes the argument for not changing the name more vivid: American Indian team names/mascots are about honoring the martial virtue of America’s aboriginal peoples in years past, and since that’s the point, the Washington Redskins are going to do something to help the sorry state into which American Indians have fallen.
While I applaud Snyder’s principled stand I believe it is wrong to concede anything at all to the PC jackals.
I want everyone to see something that will give a little perspective. The team in white are white Mormon boys; the team in red are an Indian school from the 4-corners area. Both are called Redskins and dang proud of it.
And I sure hope the picture-link goes through (the newspaper recently went to online subscription basis).
If the NFL keeps getting into the gay agenda they may become the Rainbow Warriors............
Most of the Native American mascots don’t bother the tribes - it’s do-gooder libs that are helping the poor, stupid redman see how they are being exploited.
the Washington Wagonburners?
They could collect government checks, maybe build a casino.
Doesn’t take money or means to keep you abode garbage free.
I wonder when the same Libs will be going after the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team and demanding a name and logo change?
Blackhawks. There are so many ways that that is just bad.

He's probably under a lot of pressure from the league to make this go away. I liken it to settling a nuisance lawsuit, despite being in the right, because the settlement cost is less than a proper defense would be.
The Bison made a respectable showing in the tourney.
Yes, Bison is the plural.
My favorite line ever about “Indian names” was when the Atlanta Braves played the Cleveland Indians in the 1995 World Series. Legendary Atlanta sports reporter commented on the protests saying, “where were these protestors when both teams lost 100 games a year? Now that really was offensive!”
Sorry. I confused NDSU with UND.
It appears so. Who would have thunk it?
I think the Redskins picked “Original Americans” for their foundation name to split the difference and use neither “Native Americans”, favored by some American Indians and all the folks who are offended by American Indian mascots (of whatever ethnicity the offended happen to be), and “American Indians”, favored by many American Indians (including most in Oklahoma — which I know because my wife has done some studies on ethnic identity and on psychological concomitants of obesity with American Indians in Oklahoma).
But your analogy is wrong. America didn’t take over America. Europeans named the place America before they colonized it, so the people who were there before the colonization were properly called “native Americans”, and this was true before it became a careless habit to call the United State of America “America”. If any American Indians you know take offense at being called “native Americans”, they are really taking offense at Europeans having named the continent(s).
Snyder is trying to buy off the Indians like Florida State does.
Yup. As I recall, the Seminoles look at it as a show of respect. Especially since (if I remember correctly) the Seminoles never capitulated to the US gov.
Yup, the four corners are is a nice area. If you like high desert. LOL! Which, by the way, I do.
