To most ears, it probably sounds inoffensive. A little outdated and clinical, perhaps, but innocuous enough: homosexual.
But that five-syllable word has never been more loaded, more deliberately used and, to the ears of many gays and lesbians, more pejorative.
Homosexual has the ring of colored now, in the way your grandmother might have used that term, except that it hasnt been recuperated in the same way, said George Chauncey, a Yale professor of history and an author who studies gay and lesbian culture.
Consider the following phrases: homosexual community, homosexual activist, homosexual marriage. Substitute the word gay in any of those cases, and the terms suddenly become far less loaded, so that the ring of disapproval and judgment evaporates.
Some gay rights advocates have declared the term off limits. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or Glaad, has put homosexual on its list of offensive terms and in 2006 persuaded The Associated Press, whose stylebook is the widely used by many news organizations, to restrict use of the word.
George P. Lakoff, a professor of cognitive science and linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, has looked at the way the term is used by those who try to portray gays and lesbians as deviant. What is most telling about substituting it for gay or lesbian are the images that homosexual tends to activate in the brain, he said.
Gay doesnt use the word sex, he said. Lesbian doesnt use the word sex. Homosexual does.
It also contains homo, which is an old derogatory, he added. They want to have that idea there. They want to say this is not normal sex, this is not normal family, its going against God.

ps: I am not trying to insult any homosexual persons.
I am only trying to point out just how inane many of our journalists have become, to write stories about how many syllables are in words and what they think should be done about same
or something like that.
I thought they were proud of their homosexuality. Why would that word offend unless deep down they know the reality if what they do disgusts most people.
I have begun using anatomically correct language. When someone defends homosexuality I bluntly ask .....what do you think is normal about one man putting his penis into another mans anus?
The response is usually not supportive of that particular act.
Opposite of straight is crooked
I’m partial to the terms “Turdburglar” and “Rug Bumper”.
Rump ranger is good too.
Yeah, I think I got that one, but did I mention:
Disease-ridden, boy-raping whackjobs?
> The accurate term “homosexual” bothers them. Good — I’ll make sure to use it instead of the euphemism “gay”.
They brought it on themselves by attacking good God-fearing people and trying to force them to accept a perverted version of marriage, gay boyscouts that no troop will ever see to find a new source of young boys to exploit and try to convert / pedophelia, services and cater to them against their own beliefs, watching them dress in drag on television shows and parades, among other detestable things...
I always use homo and queer too!
Sodomite and sodomy is the best term.
In many jurisdictions it is still a legal definition.
The faggot in front of you cannot argue with its accuracy, or its neutrality, because it refers to an ancient city, a location.
It calls to the faggot’s mind all manner of fire and brimstone. Too bad.
Go to your own city, Sodomite, and leave us.
I’m offended that they changed the meaning of the word “gay”.
As for “colored people”, tell it to the NAACP.
Homosexual is the term I use when I am not swearing at or about dome damfool thing one or more of these queer people have done or are doing.
Then the language gets rough!
But I NEVER refer to them as “gay!”
True story: I was subbing in a 3rd grade class. We were finding words that rhymed with may. One of the boys said “gay” and the class irrupted into what sounded like a Beavis and Butthead cartoon. I told them that the word ‘gay’ means happy, joyful. They were shocked. No one told them the word had a different meaning.
Later, I wrote the word ‘homophone’, separated homo from phone and explained that homo means same. Not one reaction from the kids. They don’t know the word ‘homo’ and don’t seem to be able to make the connection.
“Changing the language again.
As long as it keeps working for them, the left will keep doing it.”
You know....I’m all for loving the sinner....but it has become more of a challenge to not let all this ridiculousness of the homosexual invasion of our country, tip one to the point of disdain.
Are we going to do something to preserve the sanctity of the “family”?, and “marriage”? Or will we go down like “the tower of Babel”?
Hebrews 13:4
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
Actually, it's not sex at all, from a physiological or common-sense standpoint.
Only one activity involving male and female genitalia qualifies as sex.
Besides, their hero Bill Clinton wouldn't have had an excuse if he didn't follow this same strict definition!
There was a time when the “N” word which was a bastardization of the word “negro” was very common and not nearly as derogatory as it is now. Eventually the word negro became nearly as bad. Why? Why is “African American” more acceptable? My Great grandfather was born in Germany, am I a “German American”? Of Course not, I'm an American. Show me one African American who was born in Africa and I will show you a million that were born American. I believe that when so called “African Americans, Latin Americans” etc. learn that they are Americans then the race problems will end. By holding on to something other than being American we will always have artificial division.
Only one activity involving male and female genitalia qualifies as sex.
Thank you. It's tiresome to keep hearing hearing the other combinations defined as "sex" when they can't possibly have a reproductive function and a life-producing outcome.
Newspeak. George Orwell, please pick up the white courtesy phone.
I was commenting on an article (not here) about two gay men trying to adopt a four year old boy and one of the other posters, who I assumed was gay, went absolutely crazy on me for continuing to use the word “homosexual”. He tried to have me banned, which failed. One thing is sure-he hated the word homosexual and I’m sure he’s not alone.
