If Diane Francis had her way, the U.S. would share a lot more with its northern neighbor than the Great Lakes, maple syrup and Justin Bieber.
The editor-at-large for Torontos National Post argues that a complete merger of Canada and the United States would create a global colossus, add 13 stars to the American flag, eliminate the border and require just a few amendments to the Constitution. But, Ms. Francis acknowledged on a visit to Washington last week, not everyone up north is thrilled with the idea.
I wanted to attack the Canadian establishment and say, Wake up, there is [a merger] underway, lets manage it to our benefit, and to attack American ignorance about Canada, she said.
The thought experiment, first broached in a book she published late last year, was introduced on the 20th anniversary of the North American Free Trade Agreement as President Obama pushed for much broader trade agreements with the European Union and Asia-Pacific nations.
Ms. Francis envisions a full-on economic and political merger in which Canadas provinces would become 13 states in the U.S. Quebec would become a commonwealth like Puerto Rico.

As a persona non grata because of a conviction in 1977, I am not allowed in canuck land...even though my civil rights have been restored since 1977.
I am allowed to vote and I own and can legally buy firearms.
But no, can’t go to canuck land.
F the queen
I’m sure one of those is to get rid of the pesky 2nd amendment.
Its gonna happen eventually. The globalists are demanding it.
But what about all that wild beaver in the Great White North?
If things keep going as they are the US will be merging with Mexico.
Jean Francoise Kerry has that well in hand.
Judy, I think we can freeze ‘em out eventually.
Canadians only need one thing from the USA, the second amendment as part of a Canadian Constitution.
We do not need the radical US left and its Coercive Utopianism...we have enough of that already, and we hopefully are in the process of sending the Canadian left into the dust bin of history. And the Russians are doing their best to help us do that through renewed Russian aggression preventing the further grand experiment of the so called Trudeau legacy, actually a curse.
(Russia is only a relatively short flight from Russia’s Laptev Sea Islands to Tanquary Fiord Quittinirpaaq National Park, where Canada has no military presence FOB, and the Russians are in an expansionist mood for resources, they will end liberalism and coercive utopianism in Canada as a viable method of governance.)
Prime Minister Harper is in the Ukraine barking at the Russians to show how worried even he is.
That's my hope with Texas (and the gulf coast states) vs northern and left coast sates.
Francais, eh.
Queens can go there and F.
We certainly might pick and choose and admit certain provinces as states. But, we are never going to admit 13 states with 26 Senators from what is now Canada. Quebec is out for starts. The 4 Maritime Provinces might get in as one state, but certainly not 4. The Territories can’t even make it as Canadian Provinces, so they are not going to be states. Ontario is too arrogant to try.
I say that we take Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan and tell the rest to come back later when they have something better to offer. Tim Horton’s is not enough.
Canada is the size of California so we are talking six states, max.
I think we first have to settle on the spelling of:
colour, favour, flavour, harbour, etc.
Please God No!
Huh?
sorry guys but speaking as an Albertan: no please God no. Get your own house in order first.
I’m guessing the Canadian public is giving this idea big thumbs down. :-)
May we have your Generals before deciding, please?
[ I would be in favor of Alberta and Texas merging. ]
Only if we can trade Alberta for a few states on the east or west coast...
Hmmm.. Jeez, then we’d have to press 3 for French. Lets see...Quebec and New England and downstate NY as one country...California and Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington to Mexico. Then the US will take the others...
