Venetians have voted overwhelmingly for their own sovereign state in a referendum on independence from Italy.
Inspired by Scotlands separatist ambitions, 89 per cent of the residents of the lagoon city and its surrounding area, opted to break away from Italy in an unofficial ballot.
The proposed Repubblica Veneta would include the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and could later expand to include parts of Lombardy, Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
The floating city has only been part of Italy for 150 years. The 1000 yearold democratic Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia, was quashed by Napoleon and was subsumed into Italy in 1866.
Wealthy Venetians, under mounting financial pressure in the economic crisis, have rallied in their thousands, after growing tired of supporting Italys poor and crime ridden Mezzogiorno south, through high taxation.
Activists have been working closely with the SNP on their joint agendas, even travelling to Scotland alongside Catalonians and Basque separatists to take part in pro independence rallies.

Yeah, if the country worked the way it was designed to, a federation of States with DC limited to a handful of tasks, this would not be an issue...
Oh, did we miss the invasion of Venice?
Did the Venice media black out all opposition?
Did the ballot only have 2 yes options without a no?
Your shilling for Putin is nauseating.
It's very difficult to keep track of one's chips underwater, ne c'est pas?
It is non-binding, so nothing will happen because of this. But it will start the ball rolling in a lot of places.
Venice wasn't invaded by a foreign country with agents steering the outcome to a foregone conclusion. They also probably had a "no" option to check off on the ballot.
“My complaint was that they didnt explain the sewage system. We decided that they didnt have one. Smelly indeed.”’
The tour guide didn;t explain that either LOL
The official measurement is 3 centimeters a century.
Ditto Scotland
Venice looks like more of an economic thing -- I've not seen any real difference
Ah, good. Its sinking has slowed since our 1975 textbook was published. Of course, “official” statistics are not exactly the most trustworthy, now are they?
So you’re not a fan of Garibaldi and Cavour etc...?
More moderate in their views than the originals, but they effectively imposed Italian nationalism on the country - it wasn't much of a grassroots movement.
Were the Italians better off under the Austrian yoke though? I’ve read much on Verdi (the composer) who was so intimately involved with the Risorgimento and the position of every day Italians doesn’t seem all that enviable up until then.
