They were basically anticlerical Jacobins.

More moderate in their views than the originals, but they effectively imposed Italian nationalism on the country - it wasn't much of a grassroots movement.

Were the Italians better off under the Austrian yoke though? I’ve read much on Verdi (the composer) who was so intimately involved with the Risorgimento and the position of every day Italians doesn’t seem all that enviable up until then.
