Putin Has Been Good For Russia
Intelligence Squared ^ | THURSDAY MAY 23 2013

There’s not a lot to like about Vladimir Putin: he’s autocratic, vain and runs a corrupt government. And he doesn’t give a fig for human rights. The repression in Chechnya, the jailing of the businessman Mikhail Khodorkovsky and the Pussy Riot protestors, the murders of journalist Anna Politkovskaya and of Alexander Litvinenko, the former spy – all this happened on Putin’s watch. Who would not be on the side of the 100,000 people who turned out on Moscow’s streets last winter to protest against Putin’s election to a third term as president and to demand fair elections and an honest government? Russia would be better off without Putin – who would argue otherwise?

As a matter of fact, millions would. Talk to many Russians and they’ll tell you that life under Putin is vastly better than under Boris Yeltsin. Yeltsin let a handful of oligarchs hoover up Russia’s wealth while ordinary Russians were reduced to selling their possessions on the street. Putin, by contrast, has quelled the economic mayhem – inflation is down, pensions have increased. Even more importantly he has restored Russia’s sense of self-worth – crushing the Chechen revolt, refusing to play along with the West over Syria

He might have been a KGB snake and now somewhat of a jinoist, but based on what he SAYS, in fact Putin is much less hostile to Christianity than our own President.

He has restored Russian strength, prestige, pride and wealth.

All of that without apology. Russians respect someone who is strong. By winning Crimea back for Mother Russia without firing a shot - Putin has already ensured his place in Russian history.

Putin is intelligent, vain, autocratic, and runs a corrupt government.

The Obamadork is stupid, vain, autocratic, and runs a corrupt government.

Guess which one will prevail.

He has restored Russian strength, prestige, pride and wealth.

The Russian economy has been tanking for awhile now, even before the recent invasion from the Czar. There is also a huge amount of corruption in Russia. The Olympics, for example, cost more than all the other Olympic events combined since 1924, with much of that money actually being siphoned off by Putin's buddies. Russia is a gangster state, and, therefore, has a gangster economy.

All of that without apology. Russians respect someone who is strong.

Who would Putin apologize too? People he does not like he simply gets rid of, one way or the other, if not by sending them to insane asylums, then by beatings, and if not that, then by murder, which frequently happens.

y winning Crimea back for Mother Russia without firing a shot - Putin has already ensured his place in Russian history.

Oh man, just replace "Mother Russia" with "Germany the Fatherland," and Putin with "Hitler," and you would have a good case for why Germany was better off under the fellow.

More than a few parallels between Putin and Teddy Roosevelt, particularly they way they cultivate their image for the home crowd.

If he were good for Russia he would not have racked the constitution for more time in office. He is a pig at the trough and disgusting.

The great Russians of our time were Yeltsin and Solzhenitsyn.

Given Russian history, the Alexanders and Gorbachevs are the exception, not the rule.

Russia has always had autocrats and tyrants and even the few decent reformers did not really change how the masses were ruled.

The nobility, the Communists and the oligarchs today have always run the country. At each stage, the narod figured little in their plans.

Yeltsin was a drunkard who broke up the Soviet Union and bankrupted Russia. He is as much reviled as Gorbachev.

Solzhenitsyn was a Russian nationalist. Yhe Communists hated him but he approvingly quoted in today’s official Russia. It was no secret he despised the West almost as much as he hated the Soviet Union.

Your hero worship of a KGB blood thirsty monster is real sick.
You need to seek help.
This KGB monster would kill a western while ordering a cup of coffee that includes you useful idiot as the Soviets used to refer to fools like you during the cold war.

Has Russia progressed economically since 1990? I don’t see it. Developed economies need private property protection and rule of law so that wealth can be earned and amassed by individuales with out fear of confiscation or theft.

Corruption, cronyism, and their official twin, communism all destroy thes private accumulations of wealth.

Also, education in rural Russia is awful. There is a reason their young proudly pine away for the good old days in the cccp. By now they should look at their Stalinist grandparents with the same pitty we have we look at our southern democrat grandparents.

Where did I write I worshiped him? I wrote how Putin is regarded by Russians.

You may not like the observation but there is a good deal of truth to it.

And he is also - as if every one needed reminding, our implacable adversary.
