Sen. John McCain blasted the "timidity" of the Obama administration’s sanctions on Russian officials Monday, saying that the White House needs a "fundamental reassessment" of the relationship between the United States and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"This president’s response – I don’t know how it could have been weaker, besides doing nothing," McCain said during an appearance on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports.
The Arizona Republican said that Putin is likely "encouraged by the absolute timidity" of the U.S. reaction to Russia's incursion into Crimea.
"I don’t know when the president and his advisers are going to wake up to what Putin is really all about," he added. "We've got to start with a fundamental reassessment of our relationship with him."
McCain, who just returned from a trip to Ukraine with seven other lawmakers, recommended that the United States instead provide Ukrainian forces with defensive weapons and training.
"One of the things that I would do is send some of our military to Kiev and find out how we can best assist them," he said.
McCain should resign and check himself into a clinic. Good for him and the rest of the world.

Russia is a superpower. Its not an errant child. And why he is surprised it does what a superpower can do?
And Russia’s interests will always differ from America’s. Our influence with Moscow is exceedingly limited.

Durbin (D-Ill.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Christopher Murphy (D-Conn.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), said Congress stood with the people of Ukraine. They called for strict sanctions against Russia. However, McCain went further than his colleagues.
"Ukraine is going to need a long-term military assistance program from the U.S. -- equipment both lethal and nonlethal," said McCain

If America had become a significant exporter of LNG a few years ago, Gazprom (also known as “Russia”) would be far less pathological today.
I cordially loathe McCain as much as the next FReeper, but Palin would have drilled, baby, drilled - and granted LNG export licenses.
When the world is full of pathological extraction economies, a strong Energy policy IS strong Foreign policy.
Russia is not a superpower. It has a huge nuclear capability, but economically it is far from being a superpower. Its GDP is 8th in the world just behind Brazil and ahead of Italy. It has a fertility rate of 1.61% and the life expectancy for males is 64.7%. Average life expectancy is 70.16 years making in 151st in the world.
We could say the same about McCain’s response (circa 2008) to the threat of an Obama presidency.
