Ukraine's Crimean parliament voted Monday to nationalize energy companies Ukrtransgaz and Chornomornaftohaz, according to a statement on the Parliament's website.
A Crimean official said last week that the local authorities may sell the oil and gas company Chornomornaftohaz to a Russian firm "such as Gazprom" once the region assumes control of it.
On Sunday, a Russia-backed referendum in Crimea demonstrated overwhelming support for joining the Russian federation.
The US and its European allies are expected to announced sanctions against Russia on Monday after Crimea announced that just under 97% of voters in the region supported leaving Ukraine and becoming a Russian province in the referendum.
In other words Russia has nationalized oil companies in Ukraine and it will all belong to Gazprom soon enough
It’s looking more and more like the EU so-called leaders are as weak willed as the clown-in-chief. I bet they would bomb the Ukrainian freedom fighters for cutting off their gas before they would lift a cowardly finger to help them.
But I thought Russia was all about free markets. They have a flat tax ya know.
Bump
Dirty people, those Russians...
In some ways we have made the world smaller, and thus made it easier for the same types of wannabe dictators who have always been around. Propaganda is now global. Electronic voting has centralized the opportunities for deception and fraud. Privacy is now only available to those who live somewhat off the grid, or who have the technical savvy to hide themselves.
As has always been the case, we are being victimized by the frailties of human nature. Although it has become harder for me to do, it is increasingly clear that the divine advice to not make your treasures in this world is absolute wisdom.
God help the Ukrainians. The map doesn’t show Transnistria. Even if it’s not a recognized independent state, it’s beyond Moldovan control, and it borders Ukraine to its east, while Crimea is now in a similar situation to Ukraine’s south.
What will Romania do? That could muddy the waters a bit as well.
I don’t know that Romania will do anything. Maybe they’ll tighten border controls with it. But I’d have to think they’re not overly interested in bear-baiting. This is a well-armed slice of ex-USSR. They still even have the hammer and sickle in their flag. It’s been an unresolved issue for them since the early 90’s. There are young adults born in it and who have lived their whole lives in an ‘independent’ Transnistria. But it’s also a different ethnic make up to Crimea: my reading says it’s about a third Romanian ethnically, a third Ukrainian, and a third Russian, unlike the clear Russian majority in Crimea.
Paging Maxine Waters. You’re wanted on the batty phone.
Putin just steals stuff.
He’s a mobster with a government.
That’s all.
In this county and his, that is a redundant statement.
