It´s a quiet crisis. In a city of plenty, a staggering number of people are struggling to feed themselves and their families. Nearly one in five New Yorkers, 1.4 million people, now rely on a patchwork network of 1,000 food pantries and soup kitchens across the city to eat. That represents an increase of 200,000 people in five years straining the charities that are trying to help. The two biggest, City Harvest and the Food Bank for New York City, now provide nearly 110 million pounds of food to soup kitchens and food pantries a year. Yet those working

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
As Obi-Wan Kenobi said to Han Solo, “Should I have?”
You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious...
Why would anyone who is poor live in NYC?
This is a serious question. Even if you are on welfare you are better off in someplace with a lower COST of living.
that's 8,000 plus 24,000 plus 2400 in foodstamps, or roughly $35K a year - not to mention the extra money collected from the state for their care of 'two nephews'? Two-thirds or more of their income is available to them after rent - and they still need free food? I just don't get it.
Don’t forget what the taxman takes....
Four kids? The taxman doesn’t take much, if anything. I bet they get the EITC too.
They keep voting for it. Eff’ em, my sympathy tank is pretty much on empty.
Luckily, there couldn’t be anything wrong with how the country/city is being run that could be a contributor to this sorry situation. It’s those racist republicans.
Twenty years ago I told a friend I wouldn’t move to New York City for a $100,000 a year job, and I would have to think long and hard about a $200,000 a year job. Of course, you may be thinking Manhatten. Remember there is Brooklyn, the Bronx and other areas.
i just don’t know how you’d make it there, poor. or why you’d stay.
i had to sell my sympathy tank.
Look for DeBlasio to propose collective farming projects to solve this. /only semi-sarc.
Solvent Green...
Dumbass Dinkins, Michael “the rich” Bloomturd and “deBlasio” the Commie. How did Guiliani get elected? Oh, he was an honest D.A., cleaned up crime and the city, and was “there” on 9/11, and afterwards.
How quickly the low education voters forget who actually helped them. Now they got what they voted for, and deserve.
Pray for the poor because the commie mayor won’t.
Just a thought-I wonder how many of those standing in line really want a job. Perhaps it’s like the surfer on Hannity who, when offered a job for $80K turned it down.
Wonder what would happen if people just stopped giving to charities except directly to the truly needy. My guess is the charities executives would suddenly find their fat cat life styles disappearing and people would 1) start demanding jobs or 2) start rioting in the streets.
I visited NYC in 1989, pre Rudy. The place looked just like the scenes in that video. It was a sewer.
